Our no-kill rescue and placement shelter pulls many dogs from the always-overcrowded county shelter. We take in many senior dogs, those with treatable medical issues, and dogs that are 'shut down' because of the noisy county shelter environment and so have trouble attracting potential adopters. Many of our dogs are pit bulls or chihuahuas or mixes of those breeds, and this too can sadly put off adopters because of negative perceptions of these breeds.
We are always interested in strategies to increase awareness and adoption of our "longtimers". We started a "Sponsor a Longtimer" program in 2023, and that has helped raise funds and awareness, but not necessarily adoptions. We also have a Senior Support program which covers the cost of food and medical care for fosters who take in our seniors. And of course, we have bios and pictures on our website and social media sites, and we take our dogs to many adoption events.
We are always seeking ways to shorten the stay of our longtimers. What programs have worked best for your organization to shorten the stay of your longtimers and find them a good home? Thank you for your ideas!
