About This Session:
Human Animal Support Services (HASS) facilitates Job-Alike Groups to provide colleagues with similar roles and responsibilities the opportunity to discuss common issues, ask questions, determine best practices, and share program ideas among their peers. These groups include collaborative sessions that enable participants to share resources and develop relationships across multiple districts and settings.
Dr. @Sheila Segurson will be talking about Risk Assessment and Mitigation as it relates to dogs. We’re fortunate that seriously aggressive behavior is rare. However, even if infrequent, we hope to protect public safety by preventing animals at high risk of causing serious harm from being placed in homes. Behavior assessment tests were standard of care; however, we now know that behavior assessment tests of shelter dogs don’t reliably and accurately predict the occurrence of aggressive behavior in a home environment. So how do we identify animals who are a significant public safety risk and protect the public? And how do we reduce the likelihood of harm to adopters? During this session, we’ll talk about risk assessment and how animal welfare organizations can assess and reduce the risk of placing dogs into the community.
