Food Quantity & Transition Calculators

03-20-2025 01:30 PM

We have developed the two attached Excel "calculators" for our staff to use to appropriately manage diets.  Both are password protected so our staff cannot accidentally change formulas, but the password is listed at the bottom of each excel page for edits if they are needed.

Our team is tiny and relies on a lot of volunteer help, especially in the evenings for dinner time, so we designed these to make things a bit easier to calculate and share with them. We feed a combination of wet and dry here, so these calculators include wet food quantities.

The first "calculator" calculates the recommended feeding quantities based on the animals's maintenance energy requirement (MER) based on Purina's online calculator. This calculator is pre-set with our standard diets, with a section at the bottom to calculate "other" diets we'd need to feed. We use this primarily for our dogs, but it could easily be changed to account for cats as well.

The second is a calculator our staff can use when transitioning an animal to a new diet, based on feeding 25% new food on days 1 & 2, 50% new food on days 3 & 4, and 75% new food on days 5 & 6, and fully transitioned by day 7. It will calculate how much of each diet will be needed each day. We can then give this to a volunteer, who makes up 6 days of transition food containers for feeders to use.
