How medical funding changes outcomes for shelter animals

At Healthcare for Homeless Animals, a 100% volunteer-run nonprofit, we fund medical care for shelter animals at the Agoura Animal Care Center so they can get the treatment they need and the second chance they deserve.

One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned is that medical funding can completely change the outcome for an animal who might otherwise be overlooked. When a shelter animal needs diagnostics, x-rays, surgery, medications, senior wellness care, foster recovery support, or even hospice comfort care, timely funding can be the difference between suffering and healing, or between losing hope and becoming adoptable.

We also see every day how important partnership is. Our work depends on close collaboration with shelter staff, veterinary partners, fosters, adopters, and our community. When those pieces come together, animals with treatable conditions are not defined by their medical needs. They are given the chance to recover, be seen for who they are, and find loving homes.

We would love to hear from others in this community:
How has access to medical care changed adoption outcomes in your organization?
Have you found certain types of treatment or early intervention to be especially impactful for helping shelter animals move more quickly and successfully toward adoption?
