Such valuable information.  We have a large homeless population in my area, many who have pets.  I try to assist as many as I can with supplies and helpful tips, one is about the heat.  Our temps have reached up to 111 this week, and seeing these poor animals out is so hard.  Sharing the dangers of pouring ice cold water on them, or giving them cold water instead of a cooling towel when they are overheated is often received with astonishment.  So many people don't know what they should do, and so all we can do is try to spread the word whenever possible.  Many take better care of their pets than themselves, so I know they want their pet safe.  Thanks for sharing!

Great question @Kelli Porti! I suggest some low-energy, indoor enrichment that will help tire Sammy out mentally, but not physically. Lick mats, puzzles, and scent games are great activities, that won’t cause heavy breathing, which may lead to increased smoke inhalation. Thank you, Kelli, for putting Sammy’s health first!

These are really great tips Aubrey!  I have a newfoundland rescue named Sammy and we learned this from our vet tech and groomer.  Here in New York, not only are we dealing with the heat but smog from the Canadian fires....it is best to keep our furry family members indoors as much as they want to go out and play.....what are some things we can do to keep them occupied indoors???  That is always a challenge!! lol

Hi Aubrey, this is a good topic to be sharing now.   My organization is located in Phoenix Arizona and the temperatures can be very extreme between July and September.    During this time of the year we try to focus on helping the outdoor, homeless cats and kittens the most because on top of being homeless, they have to try and survive the extreme heat which is tough.
