HI everyone! I'm getting ready to submit my sitemap to the developer and wondered if anyone is willing to provide some constructive criticism about my plans? I greatly appreciate your help and am excited to get started! Keep in mind that this is a work in progress, so don't be too harsh! :) Together, we can make this a powerful system to save lives.

    Thank you so much!
    Michael

Hi, just a quick question/correction on your website (https://www.saveallthepets.org/). The number I've always seen for number of euthanizations per year in the United States is approximately 4 million, not 800,000.

Thanks for your comment! Yes, after doing a lot of research, the correct answer is closer to 800,000. (Specifically, I believe the correct number now is more like 730,000). Best Friends has very accurate numbers on this topic.

Best Friends does seem to have the best data available on this topic!

But one thing to keep in mind is that Best Friends only gets data from about 3,200 shelters in the US (and shelters aren't required to report or publicly share this information).

You should also know that litters of neonatal kittens are often counted as "one unit" when euthanized (so the report would only show one euthanasia for a group of X kittens) and unfortunately, depending on the area/resources available to the shelter, they can make up a large percentage of euthanized animals.

I'm not sure if that data makes sense to include somewhere in your page :) but 800,000 is misleading, in my opinion.

I'll follow your work.  Like Merrie - - I think the number is higher than 700,000 - - based on #'s people in rescue have told me, privately.  An example, someone said there were 30,000 homeless pets in Oklahoma.  Based on the number of dogs and cats we've transported out of state, plus the ones that have been adopted thru our partner shelters and rescues - - added with the number of spay/neuters we've done in northeast Oklahoma alone to prevent unwanted litters - - it's more than 30,000.    SAVE LIVES  UNITE OKLAHOMA is an initiative of the Kirkpatrick Foundation.  As we move forward, we'll get a pretty clear picture for Oklahoma.

First off, I love this initiative and am really excited to see it get up and running!! Now... don't mind my many questions/suggestions; I was as an editor in software and software training in a former life, sooo I tend to go overboard

    • I'm curious how you're going to calculate "Number of Animals Saved." Does getting a transport/transfer that helps them avoid euthanasia at Shelter #1 count towards that even if they aren't adopted yet? Or are animals counted after they are adopted from Shelter #2?
    • For your "Save all the Pets" link to donate - will it explain where the number comes from ("If there are 35 dogs at $81 apiece, it will ask you to pay $2,835") and can the number to edited to a custom donation amount?
    • If someone chooses to "Donate to save a life" for a specific animal, what happens if that animal's transport is denied? Does the person who donated get notified? Get their money back?  I'd be concerned that this could lead to negative publicity for the shelter or Foster that denied the transport if the person who donated is notified when the conclusion is sad.
    • Foster versus Transport (transporter? driver?)- is there a distinction between the two? Why or why not?
