We have actually always have had more open adoption policies than many shelters but we've relaxed them even more over the years. For example, we don't have anything on our adoption survey (we call it "survey" vs "application") about rentals. After all, haven't most of us had a pet in a "no-pets" rental at one time in our life or another?! We focus more on following up after the adoption. We provide coaching advice on getting kitty to settle in with the family. If it's not a match and they want to return that's OK. We also have recently started an Alumni Facebook page that is very popular. People love to share pictures of their kitties!
The net result is that our return rate has actually dropped over the years, our adoption rate has continually climbed every year and length of stay declined.
