SEARCHING FOR PARNERS IN THE NORTHWEST

I am the Dog Program Coordinator for the High Plateau Humane Society in Modoc County, a very poor and sparsely populated area of Northeastern California.  We are too far away from population centers for our dogs to be adopted quickly here, and our public shelters do not have an adoption facility.  So, if we don’t take dogs when the required five day hold is up, the dogs are euthanized.  If we don’t have room in our foster homes, we can’t take the dogs.

So, I am looking for rescues in Northern California, or anywhere in Oregon or Washington that are willing to take adoptable dogs from us that have passed a 10 to 15 day quarantine period and are proven to be dog and human friendly.  These ARE NOT dogs with significant issues.  These are friendly, adoptable dogs that have received their first shots and have been dewormed.  Many have also been spayed or neutered.  During their quarantine time, we work with them on basic training issues, like sit, stay, walking nicely on lead, housetraining, and crate training, as well as teaching them to fetch.  So, these dogs are well on their way to being great pets, and we are able to tell you a lot about them before you get them.

Ideally, we want our dogs to be transferred to a foster care program where they will continue their training and get the human contact they crave.  We will transport!

Most of our dogs are mixed breeds, and we often have puppies available as many people here still do not “believe” in spaying or neutering.  We are working on that!  Common breeds include:  Shepherds, Border Collies, Australian Cattle Dogs, Australian Shepherds, Bully Breeds, Rotties, Wire-haired and Shorthair Pointers, Labradors, and Chihuahuas.

For example, our current dogs that are ready to go are:

CHESTER:  A friendly, happy, and energetic 10 month old neutered Bully/Beagle mix weighing 43#  that is house trained, crate trained, rides nicely in the car, and loves to fetch!  Chester is good with children over 10 (younger kids might be bowled over by his exuberant play style).

JACK:  A friendly, happy and very huggable 6 year old neutered Shepherd/Yellow Lab mix weighing 85# that is house trained, rides nicely in the car, walks well on lead, and loves long walks.  Jack is good with children and other dogs, but not with cats.

We take in approximately 120 to 150 dogs each year, but can only adopt out about 20 to  30 of them locally due to our population size and the number of “FREE” dogs available in the area.   Please contact me if you would like to explore working with us.  You will LOVE our dogs!
