Ok. I am helping my 10-year-old granddaughter who wanted a puppy, to learn the rules about puppies. We just got her a 2 month Great Pyneas Shepard, that she chose at the animal shelter. We have no idea on how to house train him and the signs you look for when to take him out. I know in the beginning they make mistakes inside, but what are the general rules and how to hang in there until they are housebroken.

Congrats on your new puppy! There's a great answer in a previous forum conversation that may help:  https://maddiespetforum.org/thread/my-dog-keeps-messing-up-the-house/?order=all#comment-58b87e1d-afc5-4847-bf6f-a926009ea6aa

Also, I love the San Francisco SPCA's behavior documents. This one is about housetraining:  https://www.sfspca.org/sites/default/files/dog_behavior_house-training_puppy.pdf. You can also check out their other dog care/behavior/training resources:  https://www.sfspca.org/behavior-training/dog-behavior-resources

Since you're a new pet owner, I'd wholeheartedly recommend taking a basic puppy training class with your puppy. A Great Pyrenees/Shepherd mix will be a big dog when fully grown. You'll want to make sure you know how to train him to walk nicely on a leash, have basic obedience skills (sit, don't jump on people, stay, etc.), and be socialized around other dogs. You can find puppy training classes at your local PetSmart or Petco or search here for a positive reinforcement trainer near you:  https://apps.apdt.com/eweb/DynamicPage.aspx?webcode=TrainerSearch

Best of luck to you and your granddaughter with your new family member!
