    Hello,

I currently run our small humane education program at Roice-Hurst Humane Society. Over the last years I have pieced together curriculum from different organizations (such as HEART) and meshed them with ones I have created. Mainly the cirriclum is focused on animal behavior, animal welfare issues, but also focused on promoting pro-social behaviors for at-risk youth. Are there other animal shelter humane education curriculum that anyone suggests? How do you run your humane ed. programs (one time sessions, or extended weeks)? I'm always looking for ways to improve our programming. Thank you!

You may already have these in your collection, but some good resources are:

Kind News has been a humane education staple for decades with two age-level versions (resonably priced)  https://redrover.org/readers/kind-news-magazine/

Gryphon Press has lots of humane education titles with some Spanish language translations & bulk discounts for 501c3s (more expensive even with generous discount)      https://www.thegryphonpress.com/

The Maddie's Tail Wag books are popular, also available in Spanish (free)   https://www.maddiesfund.org/tail-wag-request.htm

This program seems comprehensive & well-established. Reasonably priced and offers a digital version.  https://education.muttigrees.org/about/

Some creative ideas here. Partnered with Scooby Doo and offers toolkits and seasonal grant opportunities.   https://www.generationon.org/projects-and-causes/animal-welfare

As it may be of interest, the YMCA is hosting "Healthy Kids Day" soon and asking for community partners. In GA, our events are 4/25, but may be different where you are as the "official" day is 4/18.     https://www.ymca.net/healthy-kids-day

I'm just starting to put together a humane education program as a result of a request from our local high school. So, I can't be much help on content & curriculum. I can tell you that I've been disappointed in what kids don't know given the decades of advocacy, especially considering the demographics of the high school. It seems small, focused sessions or events are more productive as the kids have so many other activities competing for their time. That may be different for younger kids.

    Good luck!

I came across this one yesterday. It's focused on teaching safe dog interactions to children.

@SilverCometAWA I have not heard of the GenerationOn, so thank you for sharing that! There are just sooo many resources sometimes it's easy to get overwhelmed by all of them! I do agree that small and focused is more effective! I do have the flexibility of having youth come to the animal shelter so that is always nice. Thank you again for responding and sharing those resources!

Hi Ashley, thank you for the great humane education work that you are doing at Roice-Hurst Humane Society! On behalf of HEART, thank you for incorporating some of our content into your humane education programming and for crediting our content! If anyone is looking for additional humane education content we would love to invite you to be a member of our FREE HEART Network, geared toward educators in the animal protection field. We also have a private group right here on Maddie's Pet Form that HEART Network members can join. https://teachheart.org/network/ It only takes a few minutes to become a member.
