  • 1.  seeking Advise on Very Thin Rescue Kitty

    Posted 05-16-2019 11:12 PM

So I am trying to rescue a fragile thin cat that showed up at my house. Been to the vet 3X tested for parasites, feline diseases, then did bloodwork, and then gave fluids. They should have done this all on first visit, but I am new to this and apparently so are they. :(  She weighed 5lbs when she got here. All tests came back good except kidney values were off and said heart murmur. She was super stressed from the vet visits, so I haven’t gone back for a recheck in two weeks. It’s been a struggle to get her to gain weight. She is up to 6.3lbs in 6 weeks. She eats good, have her on Dates restricted diet wet. But slow to gain. They want me to deworm her even though was negative for parasites. I have put it off because she is still skin and bones. Even the manufacturer of the dewormer states to not give to an emaciated cat. Sadly lost one of my cats 9 weeks ago, between the costs of the vet visits to try to save her and now this kitty it’s getting really hard to have much more testing done. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Try adding dry food go her diet. Royal Canin is the best kitten, but it’s not cheap. Purina kitten chow is good quality, and less expensive. Kittens need the calories in dry food.

I agree dry food is calorie dense -vs- wet food. Give all she wants have it in a bowl for her to eat anytime. Consider worming her with strongid. Pretty benign and should help her gain weight. Don't forget to repeat 10-14 days after.

Thank you! They said between 3-8 years old?! I agree dry is best for calories, she has something going on with her teeth, the bite is not matching up like it is supposed to, they said may be related to weight loss and may have to pull 2. Also must recheck kidney levels, hope no permanent damage or will have to stay on wet. Taking her in end of next week 4 checkup will ask for other wormer. We named her April.

I can't remember where I buried this image. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Here is a pic, she is all legs on a tiny body. Weighed 6lbs 6 oz last night. Still gaining slowly. Thanks again!
