  • 1.  How to find a great home for a foster cat?

    Posted 09-02-2019 05:04 PM

About a year ago, a human dropped a 7 month old cat on my street. She ran over to me and rolled on her back. I picked her up and put her in a little room I have. I put out Found Cat flyers to no avail. I am too old to keep this now 1.5 year old sweet, lovely dear girl. All of her medical needs have been meet. She is lonely. I visit 2X daily and play and cuddle and feed her well. I've posted flyers, put ads in the newspaper, and all those things. I don't do social media but a friend is helping post photos of her on FB. She doesn't do well in a cage (we tried at a no kill tiny shelter). Please if you have any ideas, tell me. I am very careful about screening homes but have only had 4 responses, none of the acceptable, to the ads, flyers and asking friends to post on FB. She's a honey of a cat!

Poor thing.  Have you checked with your local shelter?

Yes, I've checked with our local shelter, and another resource locally that places cats in need of homes. Both, however, use cages. Holly doesn't do well in cages. She was in one for 2 weeks after I found her because I was recovering from hip replacement surgery. A friend took her for that time but had her in a cage. When the person opened the cage to put in food, Holly reached out and tried to scratch the person. Two horrible weeks. Once in a blue moon, if I move very quickly Holly will raise her paw with the aim to scratch me. The first time it happened I just calmly said no and waited until she had calmed down. It doesn't happen anymore and hasn't for some time.

What are your criteria for acceptable homes?

Katie, Thank you for asking. She needs a quiet home and for the first several months, one in which people are able to approach Holly calmly or simply invite her into their space. No shouting or yelling, and lots of consistency about feeding times, bed times, etc. The humans want to be with her their house and could and would take her outside on a halter (she knows how) until she's been with them long enough to go out into a safe yard on her own. She was so badly frightened when she got to me and has done very well in the calm of her temporary home, I want her trust to continue. The people need to have enough money to take her to the vet for an annual exam and to meet any special needs that could arise. She is negative for FIV and FLV, has a 3 years rabies vaccine and a microchip in place that has not yet been assigned. If the person or people were to go away on vacation, they would hire a trust worthy person to come in and be with her at best or at least to feed, water, clean up, and play with her each day. Is there something I've not covered. Please let me know. Erica....and Holly
