Hi All! Our state has recently begun allowing us to adopt out FIV+ kitties. I'm looking for some ideas from other shelters who have a little more experience with this. What additional information do you give with these guys when they go home? What (if any) extra restrictions do you place on the adoptions? What about adopting them to inside/outside or primarily outdoor homes? All info will be helpful!

Here at Thundering Paws in Dripping Springs, TX, we pretty much treat FIV as a non-disease. We can't put FIV+ kitties into the Cat Adoption Center at Petsmart, but we take them to adoption events and adopt them out like anyone else. It's such a non-disease that we don't put a sign on their cage or anything, but wait until the adopter is in love and ways they want to adopt before telling them the cat is FIV+. I tell them that the only thing I do different for my FIV+ cats is to get them to the vet at the first sign of aything being wrong, which we should really all be doing for our animals anyway.

Hi:  We have been adopting our FIV and Feluk cats out for quite a few years.  Our FIV cats can go with any other cat or cats, does not need to be another FIV cat.  Research has shown FIV does not spread to another cat unless there is a very deep bite.  We have never had anyone come back and say their cat without FIV did get it.  Of course, our Feluk cats must be only cats or go with other cats that have it as it does spread much more easily.  Although we have some vets here that say it doesn't spread like we always thought...I hope they are right.  Glad to hear you can adopt out FIV cats!  Progress..

Hi Dawn! Stacy LeBaron posted a series on FIV+ adoption programs - good examples there as well! https://www.communitycatspodcast.com/felv-positive-adoption-program-profile-series-five-acres-animal-shelter/
