Hi BethEmma - I, too, adopted a heartworm positive dog a few months ago. He'd been at the shelter for about 7 months. The shelter vet had said he wasn't able to go through the treatment because of his age (approx 9 y.o.). I took him to two different vets and they both said that he could go through it. He'd been on Iverhart once a month at the shelter and we continued that. I was told by my vet that has done the heartworm treatment that age is no longer a factor because of the way they treat the heartworm. He had h is first injection on March 18 and the second and third a week ago on April 15, 16. He is doing great. His after care involves hand walks only, don't let him jump around or romp. Prednisone and gabapentin 300 mg twice a day. His weight is 50 lbs. After the first treatment and several weeks passed, we could tell he was feeling better because his energy picked up and he was looking to get into things. Now, it's been a week since injections 2 and 3; he's been quiet, but has continued to eat and all other functions are normal. It is good that he's quiet for now because we have to continue to keep him quiet with only hand walks for 6-8 weeks. Then, he'll be good to go.
