Please adopt versus buy. You may have to be a little more patient but please....and even if a particular breed is known for generally getting along well with children, it does not mean that a child who is afraid will get along with them. Dogs are individuals. Find out about the individual dog. Read the rescue organization's description and then call and then go meet the dog, and then proceed from there. Eventually bringing your son to meet the pup. There are many dogs-individual mixed breeds as well-that may be a great fit. But the FIRST step is to help your son get used to being around dogs -any dogs, Or you may end up having to rehome your new dog. Which would not be good for any of you to experience. There will be adjustments for any dog when they come to a new home. You, your son and any other family members ALL need to be on the same (loving, committed, dedicated) path to helping that go well. And if it seems best not to add a pup to the family you can always volunteer or maybe do (short term?) foster care for adult dogs, which is so greatly needed! Thank you for considering both your sons and the dog's needs in this scenario.
