Animal Welfare Professionals

We are revamping the whiteboards we have set up in our kennel area for tracking our dog's locations, basic info, and volunteer activities/enrichment with each dog. I would love to see the whiteboards you use in your facilities and what information you keep track of/what other methods of tracking and providing information on the animals in your care you might use.

Here are some of ours. This may not be exactly what you were looking for - at this time the only information we track are the dogs' walks.

We include the dog's name and location and track their first, second, and third walks. When a staff member or volunteer walk a dog, they write the time and their initials on the board (there's a magnetic clock on the board so that staff/volunteers don't have to get their phones out to check the time). The colored magnets (green, blue, pink) are used to indicate which level of dog walking volunteer can walk the dog. There are also spaces where staff can add medical and behavior notes - for example, if a dog needs a bath or if they have a training tip.

Have you ever thought of going digital? I had seen, I think somewhere in the Maddie's Fund content, an article about Austin Pets Alive using a Trello board. I had created one similar to that for managing foster dog information for the rescue I volunteered with. Depending on what you are tracking, it can integrate into things like Google calendar, Slack, and other digital tools and I believe you can also generate reports out of Trello. It's free to sign up and I LOVE that the user interface is the same across different platforms (iPhone, web/online, iPad, desktop, etc.)

It could allow users to add commentary as well to facilitate information sharing and communication between volunteers and staff.

It may overcomplicate a simple analog tool like a whiteboard, but just making the suggestion. I'd be happy to share how I set up the board for the rescue if you want to know more.

We just recently got our new new white boards up and going, as our volunteers are finally returning to the shelter on a limited basis. It will work hand-in-hand with a Behavior Binder where details can be documented on behavior changes, both good and not so good. It's magnetic so I can change things around easily, as needed. 

It's 7 days of information, at a glance. This is when I first made it.

Has anyone used an iPad to connect a tv screen to screen a walking, enrichment, ect. schedule.  Our shelter is constantly improving our program and  I wondering if anyone has used this type of system

@Sally Dickens what a great idea!  Here's how to do that, and a video that shows you how to connect your iPad to a TV.  Note that the video has a number of ways, including using Apple TV media player (not to be confused withe Apple TV+ the streaming service). The Apple media player is a box that works wirelessly between your device and the TV monitor.

How to connect your iPad to a TV monitor
Plug a USB-C Display AV Adapter or USB-C VGA Multi-port Adapter into the charging port on iPad. Connect an HDMI or VGA cable to the adapter. Connect the other end of the HDMI or VGA cable to the display, TV, or projector. If necessary, switch to the correct video source on the display, TV, or projector.
