The Animal Welfare League of Arlington (AWLA) is offering a free  program available to shelters and rescues looking to gain expertise in saving neonatal and at-risk kittens. Through their innovative program, the “Kitten College,” AWLA went from saving 92 kittens to almost 1100 kittens in just 18 months. AWLA’s Kitten College is based on a small budget, existing space and a well-supported foster network.

This free, one-day Apprenticeship program is offered to members of the animal welfare community interested in saving more kittens.

    The agenda includes the following:

    • Insight on program development, including how to economically build a kitten program utilizing existing resources.
    • Basic intake and neonatal assessment for kittens less than six weeks of age.

    • Best practices in shelter medicine for kittens, presented by AWLA’s shelter vet.

    • Shared medical protocols to address common kitten care issues and insight on medical expectations of an expanded kitten program.
    • Fundraising and social media. AWLA’s expert team will discuss marketing a kitten program, effective fundraising and support of an expanded program.
    • Presentation on advanced critical care for neonates by Ellen Carroza, LVT, Director of the Chris Griffey Memorial Feline Foundation.
    • Q and A with AWLA’s administrators to discuss outreach and community impact.
