We have a local domestic violence shelter that has 40 beds for women and children fleeing their homes. There have been cases where the woman won't take advantage of the shelter because she can not bring able their dog. Our shelter offers boarding as an income stream, along with daycare, to add an income stream to help with our rescue efforts. 

Has anyone successfully received a grant to help pay for boarding so that families can bring their dogs? Right now limited space is available at the Humane Society but they have terrible visiting hours and after that time runs out they have to move the dog (ie adopt it out) or the family goes back to a violent situation. 

Are there specific funding sources anyone knows of for this niche grant?

Reach out to local Breed Rescues

or Animal Shelters because they often have foster parents who take in pets to watch.  With this very sad circumstance their maybe opportunities.  Petfinder lists the local places.

Why don’t you reach out to nearby boarding facilities and see if they will help give a few spaces for free?

And I would also look into contacting Hollywood people directly thru email etc.  Ones the specialize in Domestic abuse or animal.

Thank you for responding.  We have boarding facilities and they can reduce but not totally give free space to open-ended dogs. We can't either because of our business model and the capacity to bring in more rescues. The Hollywood angle might be good because this is a nationwide problem. The problem with fostering is the ability for the kids to have visits with their dogs because of schedules and also distance. Since the domestic violence shelter is walkable in good weather to our shelter and we do board I'd like to get a grant to help defray some of the cost. We would certainly reduce our costs and the grant would help defray the other cost and we would try and help them find other area boarding facilities to help. Many of these families do not have cars and so our location is ideal. The biggest problem is the inability to know if we're talking a week or a month or forever. When they move to a new rental there are often no pets allowed which complicates bringing the dog back home. Very sad and complicated situation. Thank you for responding.

Have you heard of Getyourpet? Rehoming is the great new thing...keeping animals out of Shelters.  They post their pet for free and they find a local adopter and the adopter pays the website...real cheap for the adopter $49 to $99 

That would be better than shelters? Also hundreds of rehoming groups to join on Facebook. And there easy to find.

Do u get volunteers? They could help....very easy.

Well, if they don’t know their situation going forward maybe they can find a kind person to adopt locally.  It’s better than leaving the pet in a violent home our or in a Shelter.

Distance is a huge problem. The problem is these families will often not rehome their pets. The dogs are like the kid's blankies when everything is going wrong. I've seen women stay in abusive relationships because of their dogs. Their dogs ARE family. Rehoming a dog to them is like rehoming their human child. Lots of dynamics at play. It might not sound like a rational reason to stay live with abuse or stay in a rental that is overpriced and not in good repair, but it's hard to find affordable housing when you have a dog. Lots of families are on Section 8 and landlords won't take animals. Not that wealthy people don't live in abusive situations. They do. I work for the dog rescue, not for the people shelter. So my role is to try and help get some grants beyond what we can do for the random dog here and there. We are small and can only board a specific number and not always 100% for free. So we are looking at ways to help. Even a place 10 miles away is a problem when someone doesn't have a car. Our bus transportation is a joke here. But I have not heard to Getyourpet and that sounds like a good resource to know about for other issues that come up. I really appreciate your responding.

We have an Animal Safe House program at our shelter that designates a certain amount of kennels for dogs whose parents are going into a shelter to escape domestic violence or other emergency boarding needs. There are parameters as far as time and requirements for being eligible for the program. We have found lots of people will donate money specifically for that program, so if you find grants do not come through you may be able to promote a specific program that is specific to that need that people can donate towards.

That's a great idea to ask people to donate for the boarding of these dogs. I like your approach and will tuck that idea away and chat with our board and the abuse shelter.

Trust me I know all about pets being my whole life. I choose not to have children because of my childhood.  I would live in my car or out in the wilderness then ever let my dog go.  I spent 3k to Rescue him thru an attorney...it’s on our website....

Banfield Foundation - Safer Together

Program Types Funded: Animal-Related, Mental Health, Crisis Intervention, Housing, Shelter

Banfield Foundation is accepting applications for Safer Together grants.

  Safer Together Grant provides funding to pet-friendly domestic violence shelters, animal shelters, boarding facilities or foster care systems in order to help with veterinary care, temporary boarding, behavior training and funding of dedicated animal care positions in support of pets of domestic violence victims. Funding can be awarded to the domestic violence shelter or to a non-profit housing the pets which has a formal established relationship with at least one non-profit domestic violence shelter. Maximum award is $15,000.   Additionally, a separate 2019 Safer Together Kick Off Grant provides funding for capital projects designed to enhance dedicated pet spaces or elevate the well-being of pets being sheltered on-site. Maximum award is $25,000.   Nonprofit organization leaders are strongly encouraged to contact the Foundation to discuss eligibility requirements before applying.   Funding is available nationwide.   Safer Together Grant Cycles:  Opens March 1st with last day for submissions on March 31st.  Second cycle opens September 1st and last day for submissions is September 30th.    March cycle awards will be announced in April.  September cycle awards will be announced in October.

Animal Farm Foundation is accepting applications to the Community Impact Initiative.   This grant is for innovators, community-changers, and those who stand up against discrimination locally or nationally.   Possible opportunities include, but are not limited to:

• Fighting discrimination against people with service dogs, like Delta’s “pit bull” dog ban
• Ending breed-specific policies at pet-related facilities

American Kennel Club Humane Fund

The American Kennel Club Humane Fund, the charitable arm of the American Kennel Club, works to unite a broad spectrum of animal lovers in promoting the joy and value of responsible pet ownership through education, outreach, and grantmaking. The fund is accepting grant applications from women's shelters that permit pets.   The Fund's Women's Shelter grants are awarded for essential operational support related to the housing of pets or capital improvements specifically for the housing and maintenance of pets. To be eligible, organizations must provide temporary or permanent housing for victims of domestic abuse and their pets or provide temporary or permanent housing for pets of victims of domestic abuse and have a formal, established working relationship with at least one nonprofit shelter for victims of domestic abuse.   Grants of up to $1,000 will be awarded to nonprofit organizations recognized as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Grants may not be used for fundraising purposes.   Applications are accepted on a quarterly basis by the following dates: February 15, May 15, August 15, November 15. Funding is available nationwide. Applications may be submitted online or by regular mail.
