    Hello-

I am new to Maddie's Pet Forum and I am hoping this resource may be helpful in placing animals (via adoption or rescue) from the local municipal shelter in Aransas Pass, TX. I am an Officer with the local Police Department and currently hold one of the supervisory positions over the Animal Control Department.

We have come along way in the past 3 years (2017, 2018, 2019) in improving our Animal Control Department and we couldn't be any prouder of the work we have done to increase adoption/rescue dispositions and decrease euthanasia dispositions.

I fear we may be facing some struggles in the next few months with getting animals adopted/rescued as we have saturated our local community with adoptions and some rescue groups we partner with are reaching the limit of how many animals they have resources for.

At the moment, our shelter has thirty-nine (39) animals who are ready to be adopted/rescued and several others currently on stray hold. The majority of these animals recently came from an animal cruelty seizure I headed at the end of May (2019) which resulted in forty-three (43) dogs being taken into custody.

We are in dire need to place these animals as our resources are slowly depleting and we have come so far to be defeated by lack of resources.

I know this is a long shot, but if anyone is willing to provide contact information for rescue groups (across the country) that we may reach out to, please let me know! We are more than ready and willing to do what it takes to save as many animals as we can!

    Thank you for your time!

-Officer Jessica Dougherty, Aransas Pass Pass Police Department/Animal Control Supervisor

Check with Last Chance Animal Rescue in Waldorf, MD. That’s where I adopted my bud but I think they rescue nationwide.

North shore Animal League is a no kill rescue: https://www.animalleague.org/who-we-are/

Perhaps you’ve looked into this, but a foster network can give the dogs temporary housing.

Thank you for the advise. I have reached out to both of these groups!

I wish you the best of luck. So heartbreaking.

If you have any senior dogs, please check with the senior dog/pet sanctuaries. They really understand the old timers better than anyone. Senior dogs are perhaps the most overlooked of adoptable dogs because if their age and medical needs and costs but so deserved to be loved in their final days, months, or years.

I adopted a 14 year old chihuahua who had been dropped off at animal control for reasons unknown (I suspected his owner passed or went into assisted living) but someone from the Senior Dog Sanctuary in Severn, MD spotted him and took him to their rescue. I eventually fostered then adopted him. Although he was with me for less than four months, I like to think his original owner would have been happy to know he received care and love and spent his last days in the comfort of family and a home. Despite his short time with me, he left an indelible mark.

I fear that we, too, have saturated our local community with adoptions. Libraries usually allow nonprofits to post notices or posters on their bulletin boards explaining their mission and adoption place and hours. I will be putting up notices 4 libraries in towns that are 30-45 minutes away. This is probably not the advice you want to hear. I wish you luck in finding rescue groups that can help.
