  • 1.  Am I Doing It Right?

    Posted 01-26-2020 01:05 PM

A friend was diagnosed with cancer, and before she passed, she made arrangements for her five cats. Three were taken in easily (we took one in), but a couple of folks backed out after she passed. Two cats went to our local shelter- which is a wonderful place, but only one cat is friendly and outgoing. The other one- Jersey- is now being fostered with us. He has never liked any human, except for Rachel, and it turns out that he was in the house after she was gone. I’m wondering if cats have memories of one another? We took in Oliver before Rachel passed and over the last five weeks, has settled in nicely; but he won’t go in the spare room where Jersey is. The room is totally catified*, with a tower for climbing and hiding...there are a couple of other spots where he likes to be. Should we expect Oliver and Jersey to become friends, again? They got along quite well when Rachel was alive. Thanks for any insight.

Cat dynamics can be complicated.  Maybe Oliver settled in as an only cat, so is feeling intimidated that Jersey is here?  Is Jersey anxious in a new place, so is aggressing on Oliver?  If they are not hostile, but ignoring each other,  I would leave them be.  They may start interacting, but maybe they've moved onto a different stage.

You may also want to try Feliway.  Couldn't hurt.

Oliver not an only cat...we had a cat already, as well as a dog. Those three get along well, with established shared and solo areas. I will try the Feliway. Oliver loves other animals immensely, so I will let thing be. This is a new experience for me, and I appreciate having feedback...thank you!

I wanted to give an update: Feliway/Comfort Zone working, I think! Cat one (Gabby) has accepted the new kids. She doesn't necessarily like* them, but is being tolerant within "safe zones", lol. The boys are grooming each other and playing!!! Both boys will accept petting and like laps, but no lifting/cuddling. Appetites are good, litter boxes sorted! Thank you for the Feliway Idea, I believe that to have been a big help! We made Jersey a permanent pet...he seems SO happy here, with Oliver and well, what's one more kitty?
