    Fellow Maddie's Fund Animal Advocates,

We are writing to alert you that the County of San Mateo's $6.5M Animal Care & Control contract will be opened to competition roughly around Mar 2019 in preparation for the current contract ending June 30, 2020. We are a group of long-time volunteers and animal rescue advocates who are passionate about encouraging progressive entities, who are ushering in a new age of modern sheltering, to apply. We are hoping all of you on Maddie’s Forum will help spread the word.

We are also interested in speaking to INDIVIDUALS who may wish to be written into an application to fill key leadership positions such as: Executive Director, Director of Animal Control, Director of Veterinary Medicine, etc. If interested please reach out to Kit O'Doherty, contact information provided below.

Otherwise we deeply value your help in spreading the word to both organizations AND individuals who may be interested in applying.

    Context

    • The Coyote Point animal shelter serves approximately 5,000-8,000 dogs, cats and other animals per year - one of the largest animal care programs in San Mateo County, and among the largest in the San Francisco Bay Area, providing the opportunity to have a huge impact on the state of animal welfare in northern California and beyond.

    • Ground has already broken on a new shelter. The entity securing the contract will benefit from a new facility that is perfectly situated on miles of Bay trails that afford endless opportunities for dog walks and group hikes.

    • The new shelter will include play yards modeled after specs provided by Dogs Playing for Life (DPFL). We would like to encourage entities that are committed to the DPFL play group model, to apply.

    • San Mateo County is one of the only counties in the Bay Area without a municipally funded trap-neuter-release program for community cats and no formal program for neo-natal kittens. There is a large network of rescue groups and volunteers waiting to be leveraged and a clear path for increasing live release rates of kittens and cats.

    • Silicon Valley is home to large numbers of wealthy animal lovers. An entity with the skills to seek out and secure donors will have one of the wealthiest populations in the country to draw upon.

    • Volunteer support in this community is thriving and under-tapped. The right entity could channel this energy into greater productivity to make resources go further.

    • There is a huge opportunity for this shelter to be a model for other shelters across the state and country, thereby increasing awareness about the new age of sheltering all animals deserve.

In admiration of all of your commitment to capitalizing on this day and age to do the best we can for the animals that need us, please don't hesitate to reach out if this is of interest.

    Sincerely,
