Hello,
I would like to get your opinion on something.
I am fostering a small senior dog. She is at least 14 years old and overall in good health. I have had her for two months and I am willing to foster her until she either passes away or she finds an appropriate home.
She does have a fatty tumor that is slowly getting larger and may potentially have to be removed at some point because the location will cause a mobility issue. Her vision and hearing are not great, she has two teeth, and she obviously has a bit of dementia. She is not potty trained and seems to be untrainable despite all my efforts. I have potty pads in the house because of this and if she happens to go potty on them, it is obviously just a coincidence. Most of the time she does not use them.
My question for you is regarding an interested adopter on the other side of the country. I live in California and she lives in Massachusetts. This makes me incredibly uncomfortable because of transporting this dog over there at her age. It also worries me that this person will not have the patience with her not being potty trained and she will end up in a shelter where she may or may not be put to sleep.
If she were adopted out to someone nearby, I would at least know that she could brought be brought back to the shelter I am fostering for and I could immediately take her back into my home.
I am thinking that maybe I will just flat out adopt her in order to protect her. But I am wondering if I am overreacting like some people think I am. Could you please give me your thoughts on the matter? (both in terms of transporting an elderly dog and also whether I am risking her being taken to a shelter on the other side of the country without me being able to get her back.)
Thank you!
