Animal Welfare Professionals

Hi everyone- so we are working hard to divert intakes, particularly owner surrenders, using our toolkit of resources through our Pet Resource Center. When the request is pet food, medical care, behavioral help, etc. we are having a high success rate, but getting owners to be a part of the rehoming process outside of the shelter is our most difficult segment of calls to address.

We are looking at joining Home2Home when they reopen onboarding this Fall, but I am curious what else is working for folks? Any tips and tricks you've found that others may benefit from?

There's no one size fits all solution.  Some organizations use one or several of these to get as much exposure of community pets as possible.  The HASS Supported Self Rehoming Working Group is offerring free consultations and we'd love to help find the best solution for your shelter and community.

Oakland Animal Services has been using Home to Home for the past year. It has really helped keeping animals out of the shelter and also adoption returns. We allow  owners to post their animals that do not live in the Oakland, Ca area.

Hi Alexis,

Congrats on all the great work you're doing!  When we have to re-home clients' pets, we have relied very heavily on our already established network (using social media, email blasts, newsletters, etc).  However, once or twice when we are really struggling to place a pet (maybe due to special needs, age, etc), we have partnered with local groups that specialize in fostering or adoption.  For instance, here in NYC there is an organization Foster Dogs NYC that has a huge reach.  They have helped a couple times just by cross posting, and once they took one of our dogs into their fospice program- we love them!  Partnering with other organizations who can help spread the word has been key for us.
