If you were on this morning's call, you'll remember that one of my examples was the phrase "even well-fed cats hunt." Not 10 hours later, I came across the phrase, almost verbatim, in
this train wreck of a "toolkit" developed by the Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies:
"Domestic cats are the greatest direct, anthropogenic threat to birds in the United States and Canada, and their impacts are magnified by the fact that even well-fed domestic cats will hunt and kill wildlife (Blancher 2013, Loss et al. 2013, Loyd et al. 2013, Loss et al. 2015)."
In addition to all the other problems with this statement, the authors didn't even bother to get the citation right. More importantly, this "toolkit" was apparently developed at taxpayer expense. Just one example of what opponents are up to...

Original Post:
Here's the scoop on the Monday 8/23 call at 8am Pacific! It's a two-parter featuring guest speakers @Peter Wolf, Sherrie Bethany, and @Alexis Pugh. Details below:
Session One:
It's no secret that trap-neuter-return (TNR) and return-to-field (RTF) programs are critical to a shelter's lifesaving toolkit. It's also no secret that these programs can be controversial. So, what do you do when one of your staff complains about "returning friendlies"? Or when a city council member calls because she's worried about impacts to local wildlife? There must be some research you can use to help make your case, right? Well, yes and no. Yes, there's research out there-but the quick internet search you had in mind is likely to turn into a major undertaking. And, because there's so much misinformation out there, it's likely to be frustrating and unproductive.
Never fear, though-the National Feline Research Council has done the hard work for you, distilling the results of numerous science articles into a handful of easy-to-read summaries. Join us Monday, August 23, when NFRC board member @Peter Wolf will be joining us to explain how getting the science right can keep a shelter's lifesaving efforts on track.
Session Two:
Sherrie Bethany and @Alexis Pugh from Memphis Animal Services' Pet Resource Center will present how their team is using Shelterluv's Field and Community Services platform to track, manage, and report on their various programs like supported rehoming and pet food pantries. Join to learn more about how you can take advantage of Shelterluv's free Field and Community Services platform.
If you haven't been on any of the Monday calls yet, register for the call here. You only have to register once and can join any of the Monday calls after your initial registration. Catch up on previous Monday calls on the Community Conversations page here on Maddie's Pet Forum.
