I have taken so many webinar courses with Maddie's Fund and am so grateful for all I have learned. I believe I can always keep learning to make lives better for the animals at our rescue. My favorite course was an instructor led Kitten College course that covered everything from kitten basics to all the diseases. I learned so much and feel like it prepped me so well for kitten season. I love all the courses offered and am always trying to learn more to better help the animals in our care.

First webinar! Hearty Paws Great Dane Rescue is relatively new and I recently joined as a volunteer grant writer (after fostering a Dane for them this past spring). The ideas shared about improving pet:family matches were great. I loved the idea of using a questionnaire with questions in interview format (Tell us about a time . . . ) to be more welcoming and move away from the standard application approach. Additionally, ensuring your adopters have access to resources they may need in the future and to set the standard that it is OK to request help to preserve the adoption. I watched on-demand because my work schedule conflicts with joining live - the breadth of information and perspectives from the panelists covered any questions i might have had during a live session. I look forward to future conversations, and utilizing the online learning paths as well.

At APS-FH, learning is an essential part of how we grow, both as individuals and as a team committed to animal welfare. One experience that truly shifted our perspective was attending a webinar led by Dr. Sheila Segurson D'Arpino, DVM, focused on evidence-based approaches to behavioral health in shelter animals.

Her insights into trauma-informed care and the importance of individualized behavior support helped us reimagine how we assess and care for the animals in our shelter. It wasn't just about reducing stress, it was about building trust, understanding each animal's history, and supporting them in ways that increase their adoptability and quality of life.

After completing the training, we created more thoughtful behavior plans and began working more closely with fosters and adopters to ensure smooth transitions. One team member even took on a Behavior/Enrichment focused role, thanks to the confidence and knowledge gained from Dr. Segurson's guidance.

Being able to access this webinar at our own pace was incredibly grounding, especially during high-stress periods. It gave us time to reflect, regroup, and come back to our mission with renewed clarity. We were able to access the webinar resource, jot down notes, and come together later to talk as a group with our shelter veterinarian. Learning in this way continues to help us serve our community and the animals we care for with deeper compassion and effectiveness.

    Posted 08-03-2025 02:57 PM

Greetings! My name is Brenda Fiorini. I am a retired teacher from Northern Illinois and an author of children's picture books with humane education themes. The books gently teach about such topics as abandoned and homeless animals, dangers that stray animals face, pet rescue, shelters as a place to adopt, responsibilities of pet guardianship,  kindness, pet feelings and fears, the importance of spay and neuter, pet grooming, the human-animal bond, living with babies-toddlers-and-pets/creating a safe environment, community cats, the importance of vet care, helping the homeless, and being kind to animals, friends, family and the environment.  Book titles include:

Rescue Pup, Rescue Kitty, Puppy Love Promises, A Groomer Gets Ready, Doggy Jitters, The Townhouse With Tall Vines, A Helping Hand, Be Kind Sing-Along.

Pre-Covid, I partnered with my local animal shelter in Dixon, IL - Granny Rose Animal Shelter - in an effort to provide books titled, Rescue Pup and Rescue Kitty, to every first grade student in three counties: Lee, Ogle, and Whiteside. The count came to almost 2,000 students and their teachers each year.  We received sponsorships from local organizations and businesses to fund the books. Teachers read to students, developed pet and humane units, and children got to keep and take home the books to share with their families. The book program also encouraged pet adoptions in our area! It is called Read! Write! Rescue!  It was a well-received project for six years. THEN, Covid hit and learning in our schools went almost 100% digital. Many schools utilized  the Google Classroom tools and Google applications.  My role with the animal shelter changed from book distributor to  learning how to format my children's books into E-books and pdfs. I created an author website where all my materials can be downloaded or read in pdf or E-book format.  I have also learned to upload my books and materials  to TPT.com where teachers can access the materials: PDF books, coloring pages, study guides, and felt story sets. In addition, I learned how to create read-aloud videos of the books that I have posted on YouTube. Online learning has created a whole new dimension for me to make and share humane education materials. I love to share my self-publications with teachers, parents, kids, humane educators, and animal lovers everywhere. Since things have been getting back to normal, I am still hoping to share my printed books with animal shelters that have "Read to a Shelter Pet"  programs in place.  My passion is for literacy and humane education. It is truly my contribution.  Although Covid was a scary time, there are silver linings to every gray cloud. I have grown professionally and personally through online learning; I have managed to find ways to create digital materials and  continue reaching out with humane education impacting not only my local area, but people and animals nation and world wide.   My website is http://www.sites.google.com/view/pet-journey-press.

Online learning has given me the opportunity to study some subjects that I might not get the chance to learn otherwise!  I have taken a variety of online courses and classes over the years, from those oriented towards technology itself, to how-to type classes, and equine behavior and training related subjects.  Without those opportunities, I would have missed out on a lot of knowledge that I have access to now.

I'm fortunate enough to work from home, but this can sometimes mean my schedule is all over the place as I accommodate different time zones throughout my organization.  As a volunteer and foster, I am always looking for ways to expand my knowledge and add value to the organizations I work with (whether it's fundraising, behavior questions, foster help, or any other variety of questions), and the large selection of online classes helps to make this possible.  It also allows me to look for a course directly related to the question/situation I am facing in the moment.  Classes that take place at a certain time/place may be valuable, but if the information isn't something you need in the moment it may not stay in the forefront of your mind when the situation does arise.  Online courses allow me to find the information when I need it.

Online learning has truly changed everything. I graduated college in 2014, and while that may not seem so long ago, the world has changed a lot, especially in fields like marketing, public relations, events, and nonprofits. Just about every sector has had to adapt and evolve.

Thanks to online resources, I've been able to stay current on trends, learn new tools and techniques, and even teach myself new skills like grant writing.

As someone who is still relatively new to the field of animal welfare, Maddie's Fund has been absolutely vital to my growth. The accessibility, quality, and relevance of the resources they offer have made it possible for me to learn quickly and apply that knowledge directly to the work we're doing to save lives.

I'm so grateful for the investment Maddie's Fund makes not just in organizations, but in people. Thank you.

It is so much easier to participate in online learning. Sometimes I feel like I can benefit from in person classes but with the cost associated with those alone it is hard to justify being able to. For me I am able to actively participate in webinars and continue to learn. The webinars have given me an opportunity to expand my knowledge and keep up with all of the new things associated.

I am grateful for all the opportunities I've had through Maddie's offerings online.  They offer the opportunity to continue learning about animal care through online courses. Each course has expanded my knowledge and improved my ability to support the feline population in our care: always something new to learn, these learning opportunities have been easily accessible and useful. They keep me focused and often find answers within the session or in the vast resources from Maddie's (and Maddie's funded Austin Pets Alive (APA).

Online learning is a must in 2025, and with respect to Maddie's "offerings," they have contributed to my thirst for information and learning about cats, kittens, TNR, marketing --- on and on.

    Thank you, Maddies.

I think it is great that the animal welfare educators are out there teaching the children how to be a responsible pet owner and to be kind to all animals.  I like learning from shelter workers how to reach the community to solve the overpopulation of shelter dogs and cats and how we an help to solve their problems. I also want to share this regarding what I do.

I am the founder of Operation Blankets (OBOL)a leading animal welfare and emergency relief non-profit organization founded in 2008. OBOL's mission is to support shelters and rescues by providing much needed food, aid, and comfort supplies. With this support, we contribute to the health of homeless and distressed animals along their journey to find a forever home.  Our website is  OBO.info

The school year has just begun. (If you are in CA look at this Humane Education is a California state educational requirement click here. California 51540 Sec 233-233.5  OBOL provides copies of our 60-page bilingual coloring workbook for free for animal welfare professionals, humane educators,  students, and teachers in the United States , Mexico and beyond.  I wrote this workbook which was approved by the Los Angeles Animal Services before I went to print.

Please contact Eileen Smulson to find out how you can receive our workbook.

There are millions of dogs and cats in shelters that need homes, but millions each year are euthanized. Together we can make this number go way down. How you ask? By having humane education to teach children how to be kind and respectful to all animals, how to be a responsible pet owner and how the students can make a difference.

By the way, Operation Blankets of Love Humane Education Learning Program (HELP) is service oriented. We have an educational, interactive, fun, and pro-active activities for all ages. Schools participating in the program host a collection drive for gently used blankets and other comfort/aid pet items. This makes students feel like part of the solution to help shelter animals become more adoptable. The result is that they will help to save the lives of homeless animals.

Since 2008 we have taught 14,000 + children from pre-school to college levels. If you live in Southern California we can set up a presentation at a school or youth group.

We only need 45 minutes for one presentation.

We are a young rescue (two years old in November 2025).  We are eagerly searching for how others have organized, what makes us stronger, what helps us to enlist more fosters, how to be contributing members of the community, how to maximize our use of social media.  Everything that we can read, listen to, and learn from helps us to be a healthier organization.  Thank you so much!

I think that continuing education has also helped me land my newest job because even while I was unemployed, I was conitnuously trying to learn new information and skills. I think employers really like to hear about this kind of initative.

    Posted 08-06-2025 11:09 AM

For me, online learning has been more than a tool-it's been a lifeline.

Living in a rural area without a driver's license due to limited vision, traditional education paths were simply out of reach. Add to that the reality of living in a low-income setting, and you start to understand why the online world became such a gift. It opened a door that would have otherwise stayed closed-and I walked through it with a hunger to learn and grow.

I started by teaching myself how to design websites and create graphics, tapping into free tutorials and online forums. Every YouTube video, every article I studied while my kids worked on their home schooling projects, became a stepping stone. When I discovered I could study holistic wellness and life coaching online, it felt like I was finally claiming a piece of the life I'd always dreamed of. Each certificate wasn't just knowledge-it was a spark of confidence, a reminder that I was capable of more than I'd ever been told.

That growing belief in myself eventually led me to open Healing Horse Touch, a nonprofit close to my heart that brings equine-assisted healing to others who've struggled like I have. Without the flexibility and accessibility of online learning, that dream might never have come to life.

Since then, I've continued to deepen my knowledge-taking courses on grant writing, fundraising, creating proposal pitches, writing business plans, and even using AI and Google tools to build content more effectively. At times, it feels like I'm on a never-ending learning loop-but then I step back and see all that I've built, and I realize: I am using what I've learned. Every piece of knowledge is now a part of something real and meaningful.

Online learning has given me more than skills. It has bolstered my self confidence. It has allowed me to rediscover my purpose. And it has given me a chance to help others find healing, too.

What else can I say?  I love online learning! :)

It's allowed us to strengthen our foster and adoption programs, improve how we train and support volunteers, and find creative new ways to fundraise. It's a vital part of how we continue to evolve as a rescue and better serve the dogs who count on us.

Online learning - especially asynchronous learning - has been so helpful in terms of accessibility. I think it's a wonderful thing that education is becoming more and more accessible to full-time workers, parents, and other people who otherwise might not be able to participate in it. I recently took a night class that had people from all over the country participating in it. The different perspectives based on the different patterns in different spots in the US was very interesting! I hadn't heard of the different courses through Maddie's Fund until today, so I'm excited to utilize it as a resource in the future.

Through the University of DC's online platform (open to anyone) I took a self-paced course in project management and later one in quality management. They were affordable and self-paced. My employer allowed me some work time to take the classes, which is exactly what I needed. Online learning was a great way for my employer to develop my potential and retain me as an engaged employee. Project management can be applied to any subject, and I think it would be a great benefit to those in leadership roles in shelters. It helps us to choose the right things, get them done, and get them done well.

I think what we have all learned over the last handful of years is how resourceful we can be behind a computer screen. Personally, online learning allows more flexibility in WHEN I learn and more selective about WHAT I learn as well. Personally, I have always been effective in learning in person or virtually and the last few years has really solidified the fact that I can learn virtually and have more time to learn what I want and when. Since being in the rescue generally, I've learned so much about dog behavior and how a non-profit runs. Adding in the virtual learning has really supported the overall foundation and how amazing and connected we all actually are - we're all becoming better humans, and animal lovers because of it.

It's so wonderful to hear the stories of how we all keep learning and growing. Access to online courses has changed how my small organization can continue to serve the needs of our community. With the ability to take classes about digital design, donor database management, grant writing, community social services, best practices for decreasing URI's in shelter environments, etc., we have become a more dynamic team who are able to save more animals. Thank you to Maddie's Fund for all that you do. I just applied for my first online course for marketing with Maddie's Fund for the fall. I hope to see some of you there!

Over the last year I've taken lots of the webinar courses to help me learn about community cats. As it's not a super well known subject outside of the animal care field, it's been great to find a place that supports and educates on such a wide variety of subjects involving community cats.

The most helpful webinars that I have found focus on people education. The act of TNR itself is relatively simple once you break it down, but the people are what make it challenging so having some CE that focuses on how to educate and chat with people is very helpful.

I just had the chance to learn from Claudia Vazquez with the Arizona Animal Welfare League. I was blown away by the intentionality her team is committed to when involving the community to ensure everyone's voice is heard in learning exactly what supports are needed and the preferred methods of delivery across the community.

Last week, I was able to participate in completing the Modern Adoption Process training. I was happy to hear that when this was presented and access to materials was shared with our leadership board that they were open to exploring the learning to potentially use with the 120+ volunteers that work with our rescue.

I am so grateful to be a part of this network of people and organizations that love animals as much as we do here at the Big Canoe Animal Rescue in the Georgia Mountains. Thank you for continuing to bring together such great resources for all of us to learn from each week!

Maddie's Fund has a great wealth of information. The weekly calls have inspired immediate changes to improve visibility and communication regarding our spay and neuter clinic. The online courses have helped me learn about a variety of topics, but also allowed more communication on educating fosters and clinic staff. We actually developed an onboarding program utilizing recommended Maddie's and ASPCA courses.

When I first started working in animal welfare, I took Maddie's Feline Lifesaving course and it gave me a great foundation to start my career helping cats in my community. Now that I have started my own cat welfare non-profit, I'm looking at Coursera offerings on fundraising and development to get this new endeavor off the ground with the same strong foundation.

As a new ACO and having come from the dog world, Maddie's University has helped for me to grow in my knowledge of best practices.  From Kitten care to disinfection there is so much to learn.  I can use it also as a database for deep dives on the things we encounter in our kennel.  It is a great resource for the community as well as those of us that work in the field and the fact that it is so accessible makes it even better.  Thank you for making a difference in launching this ACO.

Online learning has been huge in my growth in our field of Animal Welfare & Development. I work for a rural shelter, meaning resources are stretched, and geographically we are distanced from major hubs, so online resources are a game-changer I am always seeking out grant webinars, professional development changing, and more that I can take remotely online. It keeps my knowledge currenty, and let's me cultivate my skillset to best position our animals shelter!

I have been involved in rescue in various ways for over 14 years, and online learning adds a flexibility that was not there before. I used to have to comb through pet welfare magazines, reach out to other organizations, look for books,  attend costly seminars, etc. to gleen any information. Saved webinars, videos, posted materials, the ability to search content online...it really puts so much information right at your fingertips.  And being able to do it on my own time (sometimes 2:00 a.m.!) makes a huge difference. I am relatively new to this platform, so look forward to taking advantage of what Maddie's has to offer. I am interested to read this thread to help me find the best of the best!

Maddie's University also offers a FREE professional development service. Animal welfare organizations can have their own portal(s) on Maddie's University and choose courses for staff and volunteer development. Managers of the portal can see who enrolls and completes courses. You can also upload your own links and files, such as protocols, guidebooks or links to further learning. Read more about professional development portals and see a sample portal here: https://www.maddiesfund.org/professional-development-portals.htm

I just discovered Maddie's Fund courses and forum a few days ago and feel like I've hit the jackpot of ideas and support to help my shelter thrive. I'm a volunteer focused on dog walking and social media videos of long-stay dogs, so initially I started with marketing and behavior courses. Those had super helpful tips that I can see implementing quickly. Once I hopped over to the forum I found even more resources on play groups and grants which I can't stop thinking about. I'm so excited to introduce some of what I've learned to the staff and other volunteers at my shelter and I have high hopes for longer-term change that help enhance shelter life and help our dogs and cats get adopted. I'm looking forward to continuing my learning journey about how best to serve the animals in our care. Thank you so much for providing these resources for shelter staff and volunteers, it's amazing.

Online learning has been fundamental to our growth. From the various forums, to connecting with actual folks off of the forums, to webinars, and just a place to find support and answers to our questions, they are vital to our community building and growth. Through this community specifically we have been able to connect with various individuals who have all added tools to our tool belt and encouraged our development as a new rescue. Often times, as rescuers, it can feel like we're fighting for a piece of the same pie. When in actuality, we are working to bake the same cake - some bring the eggs, some bring the flour, some bring the sugar - but when we all work together we can build something great and not everyone has to do everything

    I love this question.

Online learning offers me flexibility, allowing me to study at my own pace and schedule, providing me with the flexibility to choose when and where I study, accommodating various schedules and commitments.  It allows me to balance education with work, family, and other responsibilities (like animal rescue and self-care).

Maddie's has provided access to a vast array of resources and courses that would never be available to me in rural Arkansas. In terms of resources, online learning has opened up a wealth of materials that might not be available. I can access a variety of multimedia content, including videos and articles, to enhance my understanding of subjects.

Additionally, I have been able to tap into knowledge by connecting with experts and resources from across the United States, broadening my educational experience.  This combination of flexibility and abundant resources makes online learning a powerful option for me.

Additionally, I have had to develop time management skills to ensure I grow my knowledge of animal rescue.
I felt like I won the lottery when I found Maddie's University.

Serving as a member of the Saint Francis Humane Society Police Department, I have seen the online learning phenomenon. And I have seen it too in the unfolding of its impact on my own professional development. I have also observed its effect on the organization I serve. And these dual impacts tell a clear success story that I think is worth sharing. It's a story about the continuous education that I believe is indispensable in my line of work.

The flexibility of online learning has allowed me to take courses that are more closely aligned with my interests and with what our community needs. For example, I recently completed a course on animal behavior. It completely transformed my basis for dealing with animals in distress.

Not that I was ill-equipped before; I had plenty of practical strategies for getting through to the animals. But this course went way beyond that, diving into the nitty-gritty of animal psychology. And boy, did it ever reinforce how badly I want to work with animals primarily. And mostly, with their minds.

In addition, the online classes, specifically the Online Instructor-Led Courses (OILCs) offered by Maddie's University, have an interactive nature that creates a real sense of community among participants. I engage with my peers and instructors in real-time discussions that really add to my learning experience. These discussions also create some great networking opportunities. I have connected with both peers and instructors in such a way that has allowed me to share best practices and some truly innovative ideas that can be implemented within our organization.

At the Saint Francis Humane Society Cop Shop, we strive to deliver top-notch services to the animals that we care for. We are constantly learning to stay at the top of our game. For example, just last month, we enjoyed a great webinar on community engagement strategies, the content of which was right on target for us and our new initiative. This initiative is all about taking the resources that we have and using them to spread the word about responsible pet ownership. We want to make sure that everyone in our community knows the importance of spaying and neutering their pets. We hope that what we share saves some lives and helps us and our community serve the animals that need us.

Moreover, Maddie's University extends a professional development portal to us, through which we can tailor training programs to meet the particular needs of our staff and volunteers. That fine-tuning ensures that everyone has the essential skills and knowledge to thrive in their role, which translates to improved outcomes for the animals in our charge.

In our online meeting, while celebrating the many facets of the online learning that we all hold dear, I took a moment to encourage my fellow animal welfare professionals to share their stories. I know that each of you has traveled an individual road to both professional and personal development. Your stories may not be the most glamorous, but I bet they hold a few good lessons learned along the way. Why not share them? They might just light a fire of continued education in someone else. And by the way, I must commend hands down the writing of Ellen Perry Becker.

Let us take the obtained knowledge and use it to raise the level of practice even higher in our sector. Every one of us can make a difference. And when you add up all the differences that you and your fellow practitioners make, it adds up to a pretty large number. You can call it a revolution, or you can call it something else, but it's making a difference in the lives of tons and tons of animals and in the communities you all serve.

Our journey and the influence of online learning on our objectives are appreciated! Thank you for considering and recognizing them.

My name is Marci Reynolds, and I have been using online learning for personal and professional development, for 20+ years.

It works well for me, as I am an early riser, and using online and self paced tools, can be used at any time of day- even when most people are still sleeping.

In addition I enjoy participating in live sessions when topics are time sensitive, and I can ask questions and get real time input from others who are in the same field as me. I absolutely loved the recent Shelter Animal Counts webinar on Spay Neuter trends. (https://www.shelteranimalscount.org/unaltered-trends-webinar-recap)

One of my favorite learning tools is listening to animal welfare, self help and fundraising podcasts. They are technically online, but I listen to them in my car. My current faves are the Keep It Humane podcast with Daniel Ettinger, The Build Good Fundraising Podcast by Mike Duerkson and The Mel Robbins Podcast. When I watch something on my laptop, it can be easy to get distracted. When I am driving, I find that I stay more focused and absorb more.

    Thanks for starting this conversation!

I come from a general office assistant background, having been an escrow assistant, administrative assistant, etc. for corporate and nonprofit entities. I knew nothing about starting my own nonprofit, no real business experience, and the only fundraising I had ever done was volunteer-driven. I started my nonprofit in 2020 (we just had our 5th birthday this month!), and because of Covid, online learning was basically the only option. I continue to do online learning because I can do it at my own pace, it's what works best for me at this point in my life. I've learned so much more about every aspect of helping animals and people than I ever could have imagined; and as the world evolves, the need for learning and growing will continue. Thank you to all the educators and everyone who inspires me every day!

Online learning allows me to keep knowledgeable on subjects that are important to me or my rescue without having to use vacation time from my job.  Although I'm unable to participate in many of Maddies live classes due to working during the weekdays, I can sign up and use the recording/transcripts/downloads to still get the information.

It then allows me to bring that information back to my rescue and share it with other volunteers and board members.

I love the online options that are offered through Maddie's, and I make sure all of my Development team members  are aware of all the classes. In terms of our availability for learning in August/September it is typically a very busy time for our department, and it can be challenging to find the time to attend courses in real time. In fact, I just realized we missed the deadline for all the Fall 2025 instructor-led courses<face palm>! That is why it is so helpful that you have self-paced courses that allow us to learn and find the topics that are relevant to our work. The catalog is easy to use for sorting through the variety of needs within our shelter universe. I do admit that I get more from the instructor-led courses, but after reading some of the comments in this thread I am reminded of the ways that I can set aside the time to focus on these important topics. Thank you for engaging us in this important conversation and encouraging us to continue to improve our knowledge and skills!

I went from high school directly to college and then medical school before my training in residency and fellowship. When I was a resident, if we wanted to look something up (pre-google), we had large textbooks chained to a stand so no one would steal them ! About 11 years ago, I adopted my German Wirehaired Pointer from a small rescue in Tennessee and love him more every day. I volunteered to be the treasurer of the National German Wirehaired Pointer Rescue about 5 years ago and have helped integrate us into Shelterluv, fundraise, support our website and more.

With all of the learning I have done over the years, I was surprised at all there is to learn about dog rescue! Maddie's Pet Forum has been a true gold mine for me. I have gotten incredible suggestions for multiple issues and the online learning is amazing. I recently listened to a webinar about why pets come into shelters and changed the configurations on our Shelterluv. I love that I can search a topic and listen to a webinar anytime, at my own pace. I'm not sure, after all of the classroom time I have spent in my life I could ever learn as well as I do online. I am so grateful for these resources.

    Hi Leslie,

Your post made me smile, in my undergraduate program, we transitioned from big old textbooks and library cards to a kind of online research database.  It was scary and exciting at the same time.  In my post-graduate program, there were no textbooks.  I guess we can say we have lived a part of history.

I am like you; I live in rural AR, and I think of Maddie's as a gold mine and my best friend.  I haven't found a topic that Maddie's has had a resource available.

Oh where do I start! I have always had a love of learning, and online learning has helped me nurture that. In particular, 2 years ago when I decided I wanted to learn more about dog training and behavior online learning has been an invaluable resource. It can sometimes be cost or time prohibitive to attend in-person classes, and in more remote or rural areas almost impossible. Utilizing online learning has allowed me to learn so much in the past two years (including so many amazing courses at Maddie's University) and I am now able to use these skills and insights to help the local rescues in my community. I am at the very beginning of my journey and can't wait to see where it takes me. If online learning was not available, there is no way I would be able to access the knowledge I now have at my fingertips.

I am really looking forward to taking some kitten and cat-related courses because, while my rescue is primarily focused on senior dogs, Friends of Felix will never turn away an animal in need. I think it has also offered me some much needed flexibility -- I can still fit in courses and new learning around my hectic schedule.

Online learning has been such a valuable tool for me and for Feral Today Friend Tomorrow. The classes offered through Maddie's Fund and the online conference hosted by The Community Cats Podcast gave me the chance to quickly dip into topics that helped solve immediate needs in situations I wasn't well versed in. What started as a way to fill knowledge gaps soon became something bigger-it made me realize how much I truly enjoy learning and growing in this field.

Because of these opportunities, I was inspired to take a more formal path and return to school to become a veterinary technician. None of this would have been possible without the flexibility and accessibility of online learning.

I used to be a skeptic of online learning because it takes a lot of discipline, especially if you're on a timed format. I'm excited to take the Maddie's course on reducing fear and anxiety among shelter dogs because I hope to do more volunteer work with them in the future, as part of a program that pairs young adults in the justice system with shelter dogs in need of training for adoption purposes. I've realized that when you are passionate about the subject, learning online and at your own pace is a great way to build skills and knowledge that may not be available to you or accessible in other formats.

The other part I liked is it allowed me to do the course without having to leave home and meet other like-minded individuals.

Online learning has been one of the most valuable tools in our journey as a growing startup rescue. When we started, we were simply a group of passionate people who loved dogs and wanted to make a difference-but most of us had little to no formal experience in rescue work. What we lacked in training, we made up for with heart, and online learning helped fill in the gaps.

From understanding canine behavior and first aid, to navigating the legal side of running a nonprofit and building a social media presence, we've been able to access knowledge anytime, anywhere. That flexibility has been crucial-our days are packed with vet visits, transport runs, home checks, and messy kennel cleanups. But even during the busiest weeks, we've squeezed in podcasts, webinars, and short courses that helped us level up our skills and stay current with best practices.

Online learning hasn't just helped us become better at what we do-it's helped us grow faster and more confidently. It's empowered us to make informed decisions, train new volunteers, and run the rescue with a stronger foundation. We're still learning every day, and thanks to these resources, we're not just keeping up-we're building something meaningful and sustainable for the dogs who need us most.

I am so thankful to have found Maddie's Fund and to have access to Maddie's University! My husband and I officially started our sanctuary in March and were building our community as we both worked full time. Sadly, I very recently lost my job but that has given me the universal push to fully launch our dream and make this as successful as possible. While I am new to Maddie's University, the trainings I have done so far have taught me so much! We only work with cats so I've been focusing on behavioral trainings to start and they have been so helpful. There are so many tips and tricks to learn and I feel blessed to be part of a community that is all able sharing the things that they have learned so that we can all be better and do better for the animals in our care.

Hello Maddie's fund people! We are new to the non-profit world and I just applied to take an upcoming class that is being offered about running programs with our youth. There is so much to learn when you are just starting out and it can be a little overwhelming. I am hoping by tackling one piece of information at a time I can gain a greater idea of what can help us succeed in the long run. I think the more I learn the more I will know what I still don't know (if that makes sense).

Online learning has been an incredible resource as I've worked to grow Sierra Overlook Animal Rescue from an idea into a functioning nonprofit. As a founder, I had plenty of hands-on experience with animal care, but running and growing an organization meant learning a whole new set of skills. To help SOAR succeed, I'm now in a state of needing to constantly learn and adapt. Webinars, nonprofit resource hubs, and even educational YouTube channels have been a game changer-allowing me to learn at my own pace from leaders in the animal-welfare community. Watching other nonprofits share their successes and challenges has helped me improve our operations, expand our outreach, and create better habitats for our animals, including our emus Djalu and Bindi.

Maddie's Fund in particular has been an incredible partner in that learning journey. Their virtual course catalogue has been a goldmine of practical, actionable content-covering everything from community engagement and shelter medicine to nonprofit leadership. Their live meeting topics are always timely and relevant, giving me the chance to connect with peers, ask questions, and stay current with best practices. Those resources have helped me feel more confident in our work and more connected to the larger animal-welfare community.

These online tools have also taught me practical skills-everything from fundraising strategies to DIY projects for animal enclosures. It's inspiring to see how much knowledge is shared openly, and it's made me feel more connected to a community of people all working toward better care for animals and the people who love them.

Online learning has been a huge help to me and my organization.  My first job at my organization was a kennel attendant, however due to my background in administration, I was later promoted to an administrative role. Since then, my role has come to encompass digital media and marketing, grant writing, humane education, and so much more. Thanks to online learning, I can grow my knowledge and stay up-to-date on facts and statistics, while still managing a busy schedule and workload. I credit online learning for my personal and career growth here at my shelter. 😊

Online learning has been invaluable for myself and my fellow shelter volunteers! We've built quite a collection of free online courses, webinars and other resources that we keep on our website so the entire community can access it as well. Personally, I've learned so much about cat and dog behavior, common diseases, and about marketing and promoting adoptable animals. EVERY shelter/rescue staff or volunteer should take advantage of all the resources out there to keep current with best practices, new trends and to never stop learning for the good of the animals we help.

Online training courses and webinars have been crucial to my job as an ACO in law enforcement. We are a small city in a rural county; I'm the first trained animal control certified professional in the county. I am continually looking for ways to improve the animal control environment, not only in our city, but the county as well. We have limited resources but are making do by improving the processes that were in place before I started some 20 months ago. Thanks for allowing me the opportunity to improve the lives of our residents, human and animal.

These available and free online courses have been amazing to learn from! Anything from learning how to manage in the field, to reducing stress, all the way to transports and fosters. It has helped make me a better advocate for these animals in our care and let everyone else see how they truly are and would be outside of the shelter environment. We have been able to change our evaluations because of the great information from these courses. It also has helped me be able to give advice to the public when they come to us with problems whether it is their own animals or fosters having stress, anxiety, aggression, fearfulness, and many others.

Online learning has been instrumental in my professional development, allowing me to access so much information, insight and community from my desk. I have taken an online, interactive leadership training for professionals in the animal welfare industry, as well as a digital marketing course that was entirely online, and other professional trainings and courses. I love that these allow for some flexibility and enable me to connect with resources around the country. It's always reassuring to network and hear from other professionals facing the same challenges, and it's so inspiring to see how others in similar roles have overcome obstacles or found new ways to tackle things. I am glad to be a part of Maddie's Pet Forum; it's such a wealth of knowledge and inspiration, and I am only scratching the surface.

Online learning has been SO crucial to my success as a foster. I don't use any one specific source, although Maddie's Fund and the Kitten Lady have been two of my most frequented. There is such a wealth of information available. Specifically, when I was learning neonatal care I watched many, many videos on bottle feeding techniques!

I'm in the initial phases of starting an intake prevention/ human and animal welfare nonprofit. I'm incredibly grateful for all of the Maddie's forums and webinars and other organizations I have been connected to because of them. The wealth of information, lessons learned, best practices and case studies is incredibly helpful. But, since I am just starting out, I find myself wanting TOO much information. In my quest to 'do everything right' and 'learn from others that have been there before', subconsciouly it is like I am leaving no stone unturned. Unfortunately, that leads to a bit of analysis paralysis and overwhelm.

If anyone has suggestions for prioritizing when there are so many resources and learning opportunities - I welcome the guidance!!

In June, I took on the role of Volunteer Coordinator at our local shelter and promptly initiated a thorough learning process to grasp all aspects of the shelter. I firmly believe that a comprehensive understanding of all operations is essential to being a highly effective staff member. As a result, I am confident that these experiences will be extremely valuable in training new volunteers. Through our shelter manager, I discovered this site and have greatly appreciated the extensive knowledge and information that I can utilize to develop training materials for our volunteers, thereby enhancing their understanding.

Online learning has opened up so many opportunities for us. Our board members and team have taken online courses over the years and as we've grown we've been looking for ways to expand or knowledge and rescue efforts. We just recently discovered the self-paced courses at Maddie's University and we could not be more excited about all the amazing classes offered. What a great way to learn! We love that the classes are available, the topics presented in a super fun and easy format,  and there is so much incredible information! We are taking the 'divide and conquer' approach and will have each of our team members take a different course and then meet back up to share all that we've learned.

I just signed up for the marketing course and can't wait to get started!

    Hi, Everyone,

I'm brand new to animal rescue and welfare, having been in academia for nearly 30 years as a professor. These days I'm online constantly searching for classes, news, and industry information for my new role as executive director of South Hills Pet Rescue. It's such an honor to be working with a community of people wholly devoted to rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming dogs! Having been an educator for so long, I know how important new technologies are for learning. In fact, I've jumped into the fray (as it were) of teaching myself many new skills and reviving old ones to building community partnerships, networks, and collaborative events within the area I live to support the mission of SHPR. I'm very much looking forward to my Community Partnerships course starting this week at Maddie's University and can't wait to meet and learn from other animal welfare professionals.

    Cheers,

when I first started my position, I had plenty of experience with animals but very little with leadership, let alone running a humane society. Thanks to online learning modules/webinars from Maddie's Fund, I have learned so much over the years. I've been able to make positive changes with the information I've received. I just enrolled in the Marketing Communication 101 course through Maddie's University and am so excited to continue to learn new ways to not only market our services but allow our shelter to help more people and animals in need. Being able to share this information I learn with my staff helps make them better at their jobs, which again helps more animals. I love the variety of ways that make learning not only interesting but able to be done according to my schedule, whether that is watching a webinar recording or doing a self-paced course.

Online learning, especially in the last 10 years, has grown SO much in terms of breadth and depth. I have watched countless hours of webinars related to educational and animal nonprofit fundraising, and having easy access to education (often free) allows me to explore new topics with ease. I will be starting the Maddie's Fund Marketing 101 Class next Tuesday... and I'm SO excited to see what knowledge I can absorb for my org, Great Lakes Rabbit Sanctuary!

As the CEO of a private shelter with three government contracts, self-paced learning has been transformative for me and for WAGS Pet Adoption. Having the flexibility to learn at my own pace has allowed me to explore topics like kitten foster programs, dog foster programs, behavior enrichment strategies, and the TNR series, all of which have directly improved the way we operate.
I often turn on a video during downtime to learn something new or to see who is creating change in the system. This habit has kept me grounded during tough times while also fueling creativity and innovation. Without Maddie's, I don't believe WAGS would have grown in knowledge and understanding the way we have over the last two years of dedicated learning.
Because of these resources, WAGS has strengthened our foster programs, enhanced enrichment for both dogs and cats, improved adoption and fostering processes, and developed a greater awareness of biases and behaviors so we can reduce them. Maddie's has truly become my go-to library-just as essential as a Google search, but far more impactful for the unique challenges of sheltering. It has helped us grow, evolve, and better serve the animals and communities that depend on us.

I live in the Virgin Islands, with limited resources. We can't hop in our car and go check out other shelters to see what they are doing and its hard to afford to get off island to attend person events. On line learning has really helped educate and empower our staff.  We have learned a lot from Maddie's Fund and most of us have done the Fear Free training. It is also super awesome that Puerto Rico and the territories qualify for these Giveaway grants, since we do not qualify due to location for the Maddie's Fund grant. Thank goodness for on-line learning! Keep it coming and a huge thank you to all the content creators!

I really enjoyed one of the August webinars, "Coupled Up: Matching Pets and People Through Barrier-Free Adoptions." It was such a validating experience because it touched on the challenges of breaking down long-standing policies and procedures in adoption practices.

As someone younger in the field, I've found it can be difficult during volunteer adoption trainings to help older volunteers understand why certain barriers are being removed. There's often a fear that cats will end up in unsafe homes if the process isn't as restrictive, which simply isn't the case. This webinar was encouraging and validating. It reinforced that thoughtful, barrier-free adoptions actually improve outcomes for both pets and people, and it gave me extra confidence in the direction we're moving. Plus, I love being able to reference data points as to WHY we are moving forward in a new direction with removing barriers to adoption, and this webinar was a great reference!

After being in fundraising for so long, I often feel like I've learned all there is to learn.  Especially when I sit in on a webinar promising to help me raise more money or write the perfect fundraising letter and after half an hour, I feel like "I know all this".  But every single time, there's some idea, some nugget of information, that I hadn't ever tried or considered.  I can usually find a way to work it into my strategy, and it often makes a noticeable difference.  And then there are all the things I feel like I never have time to start, like monthly giving and planned giving.  It's often a webinar with "munchable chunks" that is just the thing to get me started.  I don't have time for classes or conferences.  I don't have budgets for professional development.  But I have 45 minutes for a webinar and there's always something new to learn--no matter how long I've been at this.  I love tapping into the collective brain of fellow travelers down this road.

I watched the course Treating Fear and Anxiety in Shelter Dogs and learned how to better recognize anxiety, and that predictability is an important element of helping the dog. Our organization Peace4Paws rescues dogs from kill shelters, so we receive quite a few dogs who are suffering from both the trauma of their prior experiences, but also the stress and fear of being in a cramped and noisy shelter. It never dawned on me that something as simple as repeating "1, 2, 3" then giving a treat could be so effective. I'm looking forward to trying some of the techniques!

I'm grateful for the flexibility of online learning, which allowed me to join and reflect on these sessions even during a busy August and September.

I completed the Shelter Management Fundamentals Package. The courses were extremely informative. I now applied for an Adoption Program Manager position, and I'm on the short list for the job. I was able to impress the hiring team in the first stage of interviews by talking about how we are where we are with some history of the animal welfare industry, what the cutting edge programs are, why they work and what language is being used in the industry.

I specifically remember a positive reaction to a demonstration I gave about return-to-home programs. I demonstrated how returning a cat to where they came from reduces the amount of resources in the environment, which reduces kittens, while removing a cat from the environment allows for more kittens because the environment has enough food to sustain them. I learned perspective-shifting information through Maddie U courses, and I was able to teach others that information as well.

Maddie's helps me find new organizations to follow, get inspiration for guidelines and best practices, make connections with other folks who I wouldn't have otherwise, and learn from as many perspectives as possible.

I find myself a lot saying "I learned that at one of the online courses from Maddie's Fund". I appreciate people sharing their own protocols, knowledge, tips, best practices, etc. We are in this together, and online learning makes us feel closer to each other.

Online learning has provided me with the tools, knowledge, and resources that I would not be able to access due to living in a rural community with literally little to no animal welfare resources or education.  Online learning has been a wonderful opportunity to network with animal welfare professionals and to share ideas, learn by example, find out what works and what may not work, and to realize my own personal weaknesses and strengths.  Online learning has helped me set achievable realistic goals, and to be able to apply for grants such as this.  Online learning has helped the cats and kittens in our non-profits care, by helping us provide them better enrichment and behavioral resources, ensure we are following good cleaning protocols, all helping to ensure the cats/kittens are taken care of in all capacities.

I LOVED the Humane Education course and really learned how impactful our youth can be,

I'm learning so much online, particularly from the amazing resources that Maddie's Fund provides. As former professor, I know how important online learning and engagement is! So, in my new role as executive director at a small, local dog rescue, I'm learning important new skills and industry information to help the rescue professionalize as they meet the many challenges each animal rescue and shelter must face today.

Oh my goodness, how has online learning helped me grow professionally and personally? You could have asked, how has online learning been an absolute lifeline for meeting the demands of an understaffed shelter and improving the lives of animals and the training experience of shelter volunteers?

When I started as a volunteer at my local shelter I'd already gotten what I could out of in-person obedience and agility classes with my dog. I needed to up my game for working with shelter dogs: I needed to understand them better and to build my handling skills. I did that through hours of watching online videos and through Maddie's free courses. When I faced a problem I looked for a Maddie's video or forum post that could help me work towards a solution. I learned from Maddie's to reach out to shelters to visit them and I did just that - visiting a shelter in Portland, Maine and one in California. Those city shelters were light years beyond my rural shelter, but I learned from them. One thing I learned was to require volunteers to complete online Maddie's courses before I invested any training time with them. Thank you, Maddie's!

One of the things I learned online was that big or small, well funded or out begging for money, shelters face many of the same problems, and the best solutions for those problems combine compassion, ingenuity, and perseverance.  I'll stop now : )

The biggest for me right now are all things related to AI, since it is moving so fast. Working in communications, this investment has helped streamline my work and give me more hours in the day - amazing! Overall, it is so important to learn from each other and share ideas with each other. We aren't chapters, but we also should't see each others as competition. We can all learn from each other to help the animals who depend on us and our love.

It's also helpful for me to learn from people outside the industry. I am also a member of PRSA (Public Relations Society of America) and learning how multibillion dollar companies deal with crisis communications is extremely helpful as we navigate our emotionally-charged issues.

Thank you to Maddie's Fund for offering so many great opportunities to learn!

Hi Deana - Happy to share! Please feel free to message me at bbrookhouser@spcamc.org and I can give you more details, but I currently use AI to:

    • Edit articles (ie: it's 323 words but needs to be less than 300)
    • Respond to emotional issues in a sympathetic and compassionate way when my emotions/protectiveness of my org are clouding my logical brain
    • Forecast future challenges/opportunities
    • Rewrite previously sent press releases to send again in a different way
    • Quickly find answers to questions, similar to google but more nuanced
    • Help debate with me to fine tune the best answers to big questions

And lots more, but even with just the editing  it saves a ton of time. The very, very important key is to ask it correctly - give it enough details in advance to get what you want in return. One small example is I ask it to reference our website first, so it responds with our information and tone instead of a different organization that might not use the same language as we do. And to use the correct tool for the job.

You can also use it for things like "I just sent out this press release and a reporter is coming to interview me. What questions do you think they might ask?" or "I am going to post this article on our blog, am I missing any important information that might help a reader who is not familiar with my organization?"

I also use it personally quite a bit, especially to help plan travel.

Online learning has helped me learn professionally! I use to think I was at a loss with getting caught up on our feral/stray cat population. Through online learning and discussion forums, I have been able to implement a TNR program at our shelter! We are slowly but surely helping TNR feral cat colonies all around our town and the public is very happy that we are able to help now.

I have learned so much from the few trainings I've attended so far.  Understanding better ways to promote our rescue's cats for non-local adoption has, I hope, increased our adoption rates. We are still new, but even during Aug/Sept we maintained the same adoption rates as we did during the summer months.

Our rescue, Alone No More Dog  Rescue has teamed up with Maddie's University to provide safety certifications and training resources for all volunteers. When I first came to the rescue, I was new to the world of animal rescue and rehabilitation; it was Maddie's University that gave me the confidence to step into everyday situations to keep myself and those around me safe. Whether it be pulling dogs from their kennels to observing body language in the yard, I felt 100% better equipped with the knowledge to do so safely and effectively after going through the training courses of Maddie's University. I am grateful for this resource and hope to continue to spread the word on the amazing education Maddie's University provides!

I just finished watching the August 25th weekly community conversation - Coupled Up: Matching Pets and People. We are a fairly new Great Dane rescue and just joined Maddie's Fund so this was my first viewing. I appreciated the breadth of content focused on the removing barriers to successful long-term adoptions. I had many take-aways - particularly focused on supporting better human engagement through better interaction and "applications", improved understanding of potential impacts to adoption success, and providing real and accessible resources for medical care, food, etc.

Having a degree in a completely different field (and 25 years experience in said field) then joining this field has been a culture shock to say the least. But a good one!! I am now starting a new Humane Education program at our shelter and I couldn't do it without the online classes available. Online learning has given me the opportunity to further my knowledge base in this field, while working!! I am truly grateful to Maddie's University for the knowledge and expertise we have at the touch of our fingers!

I have benefitted from on-line courses from Maddies Fund , I am learning so many animal welfare topics with a push of a button, Operation Blankets of Love works with many shelters donating comfort items ie: blankets and pet beds.  I have read many article about how the shelter animals behavior changes when it is placed in a kennel, not knowing why they are there and not with their owner.  It has helped me to understand even more what we need to do to help these homeless pets to make their lives more comfortable and less stressful.  I always look forward to new courses that you have to keep learning.

The Humane Education: Tools & Techniques Apprenticeship taught by the Charleston Animal Society is one of the best resources for anyone starting out in the field of Humane Education. The Humane Education course that Maddie's Fund provides is a huge roadmap for everyone, whether they have experience or are relatively new like me. The instructors made the virtual classes engaging and informative, while the modules provided a good framework to follow along with. The course taught me different ways to collect measurable data to visualize and understand the benefits of our outreach and events, as well as how to create an SOP for any new programs we may implement in the future. Our instructors De, Heather, and Kylie also provided us with resources for grants and funding, lessons and activities, and continuing education programs. The knowledge they shared guided me to create cards for kids that visit us and donate and create debrief forms for our programs to evaluate how impactful our outreach visits are. Hosting this course online not only helps more people learn about our niche field, but it also makes the resources accessible to anyone who is interested in creating an education department in their shelters or looking to improve or add to their programs. It's great to be able to broaden my knowledge and to know there are people navigating similar trials and tribulations and be able to lean on each other for guidance and support. The program gave me newfound confidence in how I can best serve in my role not only for my shelter but for the community we hope to inspire.

I made a big career change into Animal Welfare and I completed the Maddie's Fund Humane Education Apprenticeship to help me transition into my new career as a Humane Educator at the Jacksonville Humane Society. Online learning has been pivotal in helping me understand all of the new information in this field. I knew almost nothing coming into this, so it was a little daunting.

With online learning, I've been able to expand my knowledge and get comfortable with everything concerning working with animals, which has in turn helped me teach kids about it too. I've learned all about lesson plans, animal body language, you name it! The internet can be a great place, and Maddie's Fund Forums have a plethora of information right at your fingertips.

I am so grateful for online learning, and that so many people in this field are willing to share their knowledge to help everyone feel comfortable and confident in what they do. We all have to work together and help each other to be able to help the pets!

Online learning has been such a huge help for me and my team. Having access to courses and webinars at our own pace has meant we can keep building our skills even during busy seasons. I personally found the adoption counseling and behavior modules especially useful - they completely changed how I approach conversations with potential adopters, making them more supportive and less transactional.

The flexibility of being able to revisit content when needed has also helped me stay grounded and motivated. It's encouraging to know that no matter where we're at, there's always an opportunity to learn, grow, and improve the way we care for animals and engage with our community.

Thank you to Maddie's Fund for making so many resources accessible - it really does make a difference for organizations like ours

Curious to know how  you motivate your staff to listen to those topics which could help them? They are tired after an 8 hour day caring for 200 plus dogs and 100 plus cats.

Maddie's Fund online learning has been invaluable in my personal journey.  The on-demand resources were the foundation for my capstone project on the relationship between rescues and fosters.  Pretty much every question I had was answered somewhere in a Maddie's Fund course, helping me complete my master's degree this summer with a concentration in contemporary animal services leadership.

In addition, I am lucky to volunteer with a rescue that is constantly researching and learning to provide the best experience for rescues and volunteers.  What I have learned from Maddie's Fund has allowed me to articulate to donors what my rescue is doing that sets them apart.
