  • 1.  Bookkeeper / Accountant Volunteer Needed -- Where to Find?

    Posted 11-05-2024 06:30 AM

Our TNVR nonprofit desperately needs a bookkeeper/accountant. One, does anyone know anyone who may be interested in helping us out? Two, if that question is inappropriate to post here, does anyone have suggestions as to where to find volunteers? We've tried VolunteerMatch and Facebook, but no solid leads with experience yet. Thank you in advance for your help and suggestions!

    Hi Stef,

I'm not a professional bookkeeper or accountant, but I've handled the books at my company for 20 years, so I'm familiar with the fundamentals of accounting-chart of accounts, reconciling, credits/debits, balance maintenance, and so on. If this is the kind of stuff you need help with I'd be happy to see what I can do. But just to note, I'm not able to assist with any analysis, consulting, or tax advice that requires a certified professional. Let me know if I can be of help!

We tried a couple of volunteer bookkeepers, but they were unreliable. I'm sure this is not the case for all volunteers (no offense to Brandon, who volunteered!), but it's what we experienced, and we can't risk it again. For something as critical as our finances/books, we decided to outsource a bookkeeper.  We use the services of Jitasa, a firm that provides accounting services specifically only for nonprofits. Their staff are mainly outside the US, but I have not had a communcation/language etc problem with them at all (the only thing is the time zone difference). We are happy with the services they provide, and they are the lowest priced firm or consultant that I have found. We pay about $360/month. It's our largest consulting expense but it's worth it.

Thank you, Melody! I'll run this by our president. The reliability and peace of mind involved with hiring a professional for these services make it seem like something worth paying for.

I also want to mention that, if you're looking for accounting/bookkeeping software, I highly recommend Xero. During the early years of my company I struggled to find a good accounting solution and I hated Quickbooks. I eventually found Xero and we migrated to the software in 2015. It is, in my opinion, the easiest to use accounting software on the market.

It's worth noting that my company is for-profit, and I'm not aware of the specific accounting needs a non-profit may have, but I'd be willing to bet Xero has whatever functionality you need. It's worth looking into.

Thank you for the Xero recommendation and the offer to help us, Brandon! I will run both ideas by our president.

I randomly came across accounting software that specializes in nonprofits. I wasn't even aware that was a thing. Anyway, for good measure, I wanted to post a link to a list of nonprofit accounting software for future reference that may help others who stumble onto this discussion.
