Hi! I work at 501(c)(3) animal rescue in NC and we operate a high-volume spay/neuter clinic for feral cats and cats in our foster program. We are attempting to calculate our average cost per surgery for an upcoming grant application and I am hoping for a little input from this community to help make sure our approach is as accurate and comprehensive as possible. My plan is to consult our volunteer veterinarian and create a list of all the medications, consumables, surgical instruments, and other equipment that we use for a s/n surgery; figure out the cost per unit for each of these items; and total the costs per unit to determine the cost per procedure. I'm wondering if this method seems reliable or if there is another best practice for tracking and calculating expenses for s/n surgeries? I'd also be very grateful if anyone would be willing to share your average cost per s/n as a point of comparison.
