We are a municipal animal impound facility, and unfortunately the majority of owners coming in to claim their cats are not bringing a carrier to put their cat in to transport it back home. We have been discussing the idea of having the cardboard cat carriers available to send cats home in when their owner shows up without a crate, but are finding that the cardboard carriers are not as inexpensive as we were thinking they would be. Does anyone have a good resource for these cardboard carriers that they would be willing to share? Or recommendations on getting claimed cats back home safely when their owner picks them up from our facility?

Not an inexpensive option, but these are what we used in my shelter because they did double duty: vertical space and a hiding place in the kennel, then it goes back together to become a cat carrier. We do get the same problem as well. We do have card board carriers available for purchase for the cats going home. We get ours from MWI.

We also use C. Specialties, but just order the regular cardboard carriers.  They are very sturdy and we even use them to send adopted cats home when folks don't have a carrier.  Depending on our donated funds, we either give them away or charge a $5 fee.  https://www.cspecialties.com/contents/en-us/d15.html#p165

I agree with using CSpecialties. They have been the most affordable option I have found. What I would suggest is charging for the carrier for owners that come to get their cat without a carrier. It could be to cover the cost of the carrier or a little bit more. We offer them for sale at our shelter for $7 + tax.
