We hope to see you on the next Maddie's Community Conversation on Monday, February 2, 2026 at 11am PT / 2pm ET  for "Expand Spay and Neuter with MASH," a conversation with @Megan Gram, Operations Director, and @Renee Gutierrez, M.A.S.H. Responder and RVT, for Animal Balance

Join us for this engaging and informative Community Conversation where we'll explore what M.A.S.H. style sterilization clinics truly are and how they can help you increase access to care in your community. This session will empower you to be creative with your shelter space (as well as other spaces), team, and equipment to help increase spay/neuter capacity for your shelter or community animals (community cats included).

These speakers bring a wide variety of skills and knowledge to this discussion. With over 20 years of experience implementing M.A.S.H. clinics and community partnerships worldwide, and now here in the U.S., Animal Balance is one of the only organizations working both in the US and internationally to increase spay/neuter capacity in this way.

This session is designed for clinic staff, shelter staff or volunteers who want to help increase spay/neuter capacity in their communities. Together we will discuss Animal Balance's program model and how you can transform your shelter, local community center or the high school gymnasium into a safe, efficient and effective high quality, high volume sterilization clinic while adhering to state regulations and laws.

This session is especially relevant for adoptions and foster staff & volunteers, return to home & intake prevention staff, veterinary professionals (vets, techs, & support staff), behavior staff & volunteers, field services & animal control officers, grant writers & fundraisers, and marketing & communications staff - but all are welcome!

    🔑 Key Takeaways:

    • M.A.S.H. sterilization clinics make it possible for your team to safely bring clinics to specific neighborhoods in need, while maximizing efficiency and increasing capacity for surgery.

    • Thinking outside the box can help your team use an existing space in your shelter or community to increase your capacity to provide sterilization services. You might be surprised at what your team can do!

    • How to effectively and safely spay & neuter 200 animals in three days.

Don't forget! Maddie's Fund will be giving away up to $10,000 in grants each month! You can enter for a chance to win each time you attend a call or watch it on demand during the month by completing the monthly giveaway drawing entry form

It depends on the area, but somewhere between $800-$1600/day - I would ask a DVM in your area what they think is fair!

For a tech, it depends on whether or not they are licensed and their skill level - but something like $100-$300/day would be reasonable.

    Unanswered question from the chat:

"Does Animal Balance help in other countries?  We've been contacted by people in Iraq wanting to do this, but their barrier is knowledge of local vets for spaying cats.  The vets speak some English, so it's possible some training could be done online." - @April King

Hi Jan - we do not share copies of our SOPs as they have taken many years to create, but if you want to email me we can probably come up with a way to help get you going in the right direction at least - mgram@animalbalance.org

Attached you will find the equipment list for the bigger ticket items you will need in order to run two surgical tables and two prep tables. Obviously the list is not exhaustive, but it's a good place to start in terms of what you need to get off the ground.

Presentation: Expand Spay and Neuter with MASH

    Highlights from the Chat

    • "M.A.S.H is HQHVSN." -  Emma Clifford
    • "It's HQHVSN in a non-permanent setting.  Operation Catnip in FL used to work that way, on Saturdays.  That's vs. having a permanent spay-neuter clinic.  HQHVSN refers to... high volume, using special techniques allowing for smaller incisions and less time for surgery because it's very efficient, with no wasted movements." - April King
    • "All pics shown are from Fresno Animal Center. I recognize all those people from volunteering at those events." - Juliet Doty
    • "I try to bake goodies for a clinic that does Feral Fridays." - Anita Selby
    • "You guys started something very amazing. Wonderful work." - Anita Selby
    • "Thank you for all the guidance" - Mariann Persad
    • "Thank you so much for this presentation!!!" - Mary Flores
    • "Thank you for all your very important work!" - Marion Barbato
    • "Thank you.  I will check out the sites for the Galapagos program!" - Christine Best
    • "More S/N = Less roaming animals prone to injury and disease!" - Jenn Bennett
