    We hope to see you on Monday, May 15, 2023 at 11am PT for our next Community Conversations call.

    We will be joined by Dr. Kwane Stewart, Veterinarian and Co-Founder of Project Street Vet. Project Street Vet is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit public charity that provides free veterinary care, treatment, and support to the pets of individuals experiencing homelessness and/or housing vulnerability. During his presentation, Dr. Kwane Stewart will tell us about his personal journey -- "Many years ago on the verge of leaving the veterinary profession, I stumbled upon an unhoused man and his suffering dog. In a spontaneous act of kindness, I discovered why it wasn't my time to give up. It led to a 12-year, life-changing odyssey -  serving the pets of the unhoused - that continues today."

    I have to say this is the best zoom meeting to date.     I ordered his book  can't wait to read it.   My problem with reading is it makes me go to sleep .   So, I usually have 
    to read the same pages over a few times.   lol

    For me, this was the MOST impactful and inspiring conversation/presentation I have attended. I don't have much TV online access or time to watch things so I never heard of him until today. I barely have time to attend any more sessions and webinars but I was absolutely captivated, inspired and brought to tears. I was thinking of what colleagues and vet friends I was going to share this with and get the book for them too as it will be truly inspiring. God bless Dr. Stewart. I pray this leads to many more street vet type programs across the globe.

    Dr. Kwane Stewart will be the keynote speaker at the 2023 CVMA PacVet Conference in Long Beach. Can't wait to meet him.
    I do this work for San Mateo County, I have tried to utilize the One Health concept with my work for the county Health Department and we coordinate with the Street Medicine program to provide care for the pets as well as their owners!

    Hi Dr. Lewis,
    Street Dog Coalition is another non-profit that provides free care for pets of the unhoused. The organization is rooted in Colorado but they have free clinics all over the country or wherever they can partner with the vets. Does San Mateo County have a Street Medicine program as well? It is wonderful that programs like StreetVet, SDC, and yours exist. Thank you for supporting One Health.

    There is a Street Dog group from Santa Clara County that visits with a local church group that provides hot meals for the unhoused. They go there once a month, at least they used to. It's a site that I used to go to with my service but since Street Dog is covering that site, I've moved on to other sites. I also go to anywhere that the homeless resource coordinating organizations and the San Mateo Police Department Homeless Outreach officers contact us to go to. Some of the pets and owners that I used to see at the church group site are now in temp housing with the homless resource organizations so I still see those clients. They've kind of become long term clients since I first strated my program in 2018. Thanks to organizations like CAWFC, and California for All Animals and hopefully Maddie's, I've gotten grants to purchase supplies since the county only pays my partime salary. I'm chipping away at my manager and her manager to try to make my program an official service of the health department.

    So many people think that Silicon Valley is wealthy due to the number of large tech companies in our area but the high cost of living is causing homelessness to sky rocket. We may not have the largest population of unhoused but we have an awful lot of people who just can't afford to pay rent here, never mind to eat for themselves or their pet.

    Kathleen,
    I volunteered with SDC when they had their free clinic in Sacramento this past April. I am a trainer and want to offer free behavior services. I have to say most of the dogs are very good. The only complaints are jumping and pulling. I brought harnesses and leashes and was happy to see so many ditched the collars. I hope with the no-pull harnesses, the guardians will be able to control their dogs better. The next clinic is in July and I am definitely volunteering again.

    I cried several times throughout. Thank you so much for sharing and for being vulnerable with us all. You touched on so many issues going on nationwide, and shined light from a veterinarian perspective that goes unnoticed so much of the time! You're changing lives, and we can't thank you enough for your mission, and compassion for communities around you near and far.

    Our Denver homeless population NEEDS you! We would love to link with anyone else that is in Colorado to get this going! Fostering Love Rescues is just a small animal sanctuary, but our team is happy to help where we can!

    This is the first zoom meeting I was able to go back and watch! What a great one to have time for! I need this book on Audible so I can listen on the go. While our community is small and doesn't have unhoused like bigger areas, it gave me lots of ideas for further outreach in the at-risk communities. I always get so excited for all this great work going on around us! Thank you for all y'all do!

    Dr. Kwane's Zoom really put into perspective what veterinary practitioners experience on a daily basis... that mix of happiness for a new patient and their new animal family member constantly sandwiched by the anguish of loss. The act of kindness toward the unhoused person whose dog had a skin condition really resonated with me... The fact that Dr. Kwane SAW the issue and then DID something about it stayed with me. What a powerful presentation on hope, compassion, resilience, and working together. I'll definitely be getting his book! 

    For those who have read it, were there any parts of the book that made you think, "I'd like to do this with my organization"?
