Our Shelter has 3 Facebook pages , is it a good idea to let one go ? The oldest one has over 53,000 followers run by volunteers , the  official shelter page about  43,000  followers , and another volunteer run page with about 30,000 …

Do all of these pages post the same type of content for the same type of audience? If so, then you might be duplicating effort, but if all three pages have good engagement, it might make sense to instead think about what the goal for each page is.

For example, we have our main FB page, with all the standard shelter-related content. It includes a wide range of post types, and has the biggest reach. We also have an animal control page, under the name of our ACOs. Only stray animals and requests for public info/tips get posted there. If someone is looking for a missing pet, that's the page for them to keep checking. We also have a volunteer-run page focused on adoption promotion of harder-to-place or long-stay pets. So that page is more informal, and only features the pets currently for adoption. It doesn't have info on fundraisers in the community, or requests for new foster homes. It's just sharing things that display the personality of these overlooked pets.  We have 3 pages, but they all have different purposes and different targeted audiences. Someone who wants to look at cute animal videos isn't going to our ACO page to see cats hit by cars, and someone looking for a lost cat doesn't need to check the main page and scroll past fundraisers.

Those are good points … they are all

different but highlight most of same content … the AC page has strays / rescues needed / and  some adoptable dogs … the other pages highlight more just adoptable dogs and hard to place , try to make it different dogs on the pages …

the oldest page has the most followers but the past volunteer who started the page can sometimes post negative stuff,  she hasn't for a awhile now but you never know when … so some thought could just let go … issue is a-lot of public think it's  the main page because it's been around so long and still message there … trying to steer people to the official page … it's just scary letting a page go with so many followers

It's important to examine the content of each page to determine if the posts are duplicates or if they represent separate pages for distinct content, such as events, adoptions/fosters, or general shelter news. If two pages are sharing mostly identical posts, it might be simpler to close one to avoid confusion. This ensures that important posts about events, for instance, are not missed by followers due to one page not sharing the update.
