  • 1.  Grants Outside of TNR/Rescue

    Hi there!
First of all, I'd like to introduce myself. I work for an amazing non-profit called Czar's Promise! I am a grant writer with approximately two years of experience.
I suppose this post is about both resources as a grant writer as well as an observation.
It's difficult for me to find grant opportunities that are outside of the TNR/Rescue scope. There are perhaps about 2 dozen organizations I have found nationally that support animal welfare outside of these scopes. It's interesting, because I think, for some organizations like Czar's Promise, there is not a "category" we fit in, although there are a few organizations like us out there., in that we don't directly provide medical services but work with vet hospitals that do.  I think it also raises the importance of programs like TNR and rescue. I think everybody on this forum can agree that saving animals' lives and making those lives devoid of disease and hunger is why we are here!
Right now, we use Grant Station, but are looking into Candid. Does anybody have experience with this platform, or another recommendation? I would love to hear about it!

I have been writing grants successfully for my org  for the last 10 years.  Ours is an intake prevention focus-we fund spay-neuter for low income/underserved pet owners and feral cat caregivers in central AZ. We do not provide direct medical care, so,  like you, we work with veterinary services.
I have used Grant Gopher and Instrumental in the past, but found that just doing independent on-line research on what might be out there worked just as well for me (and no fee.) I would also say get involved with as many groups/organizations/forums, etc  as you can, as they can be a good source for info as to what might be available.

The grant situation is especially tough now, as the money pool seems to shrink each year as the applicant pool grows; however, diligent research and good writing will still get you grants. I would suggest you focus on the smaller grantors (as opposed to say, Petsmart) as they typically have less demanding data collection/reporting requirements; however, you know your org best, so they may also be options for you.
