  • 1.  Has anyone utilized middle and high school teachers as community resources in TNR education?

    Hello, everyone,

Newcomer here. Happy to have found this great resource. Has anyone taken Trap Neuter Return education into their local schools? We have a few volunteers who are also middle school teachers, and I'm wondering if there's any mileage in writing a lesson plan that uses TNR as its focus. For example, TNR in an art class (designing posters, flyers, general cat art), in a biology class (cat breeding rates, effects of early spay/neuter on anatomy/health), in English classes (poetry, stories, articles). I'm thinking that getting kids involved in the philosophy of TNR might help us get a foothold in communities with unaltered cat groups.

I'd love any thoughts the group may have.

Love this idea! I don't know of anything like this in our area (Charlotte, NC) and I don't know how receptive they would be - 24/7 unattended tether is still legal here :(

I would go even a step further and have lessons that talk about how to care for pets, what the cities ordinances are, how to find a lost pet/get a found pet back home and the general importance of Spay/Neuter.

I'd love to follow any programs you develop with schools in your area.

I love that idea re. ordinances! That would talk really well to a civics / government lesson plan. I have two teachers on board and hope to meet with them over the next month to plan for fall 2023. I will update the group as this progresses.

I would have loved to go on a field trip where students had to be silent and sneaky in order to watch a caregiver feed or trap a feral colony!

I don't think schools offer woodshop anymore, but making feral cat houses and catios would be more rewarding than making a jewelry box.

I also think that there should be Boy and Girl Scout badges for learning about TNR.

Check out muttigrees, I don't know if they have anything specific to TNR but it might useful!

Our rescue, ALL FUR ONE in Toms River, NJ has a Junior Volunteer program for school age kids.  One of our volunteers, Kristine Laporte,  is a teacher at a local elementary school.  She has incorporated animal rescue in several of her lesson plans.  This not only gives the kids the chance to get involved but also learn along with the curriculum.  We also work with local scout troops who have done fund raisers and created awareness to our cause to help save animals and place them in loving secure homes.  https://www.manchestertwp.org/news/posts/~board/district-news/post/ridgeway-elementary-schools-junior-volunteer-students-share-with-their-peers-all-about-all-fur-one-rescue

This is such a good idea! The little ones are so eager to pitch in,and they set a good example for the adults. This has me giving all smiles!

We do not, but I love the idea! In our volunteer orientation when I cover our TNR program, I specifically talk about it as a great opportunity for parent-child teams. I go over how safe it is, rewarding, important, etc.....  And honestly, people mostly look at me like I'm nuts!

Our TNR team is our smallest volunteer team, and I have never had anyone under 18 participate. We do have a monthly TNR clinic on Saturdays that doesn't start super early (trapping is 7am-10am).

I'd love to hear suggestions for recruiting younger folks for TNR advocacy and volunteering!
