Hello Maddie's Friends!
When I went to Tennessee to attend an emotional-cpr training, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. But ten minutes in, I couldn't understand why this training wasn't mandatory...everywhere. In every vet hospital, animal shelter, medical school, and more. I was so struck by the training's impact, I immediately went on to become a Lead Trainer. As a veterinarian, it's my hope that this training will be instituted in all animal-related programs to support the people who work tirelessly to be a voice for animals and who deal with the HUMAN aspect of animals every day. The program teaches us to listen and to assist one another without the responsibility of having all the answers, or fixing the person or the situation.
EmotionalCPR is a public health program of the National Empowerment Center that teaches ANYONE to assist another through an emotional crisis. This training is experiential, and emphasizes embodied listening skills and reconnecting heart and mind as we support others...and ourselves...through difficult times. Based on the three tenets of Connect-Empower-Revitalize, ECPR teaches us to recognize humans as doing the best they can, without our innate need to judge, FIX, or ADVISE! This program has been successfully taught to veterinarians, shelter staff, equine therapists, animal behaviorists, social workers, lay people, teachers, students, law enforcement, and more. Rather than similar programs which teach participants to take control and refer, ECPR believes we are capable of finding our own answers, and gives us a way to support ourselves and others when dealing with tricky clients, customers, colleagues, strangers, and emotionally-charged situations common in shelter situations that cause burnout, compassion fatigue, and worse. We've had overwhelmingly positive responses from our animal shelter workers who have been through this training. There is so much healing in being truly heard.
We will be teaching a veterinary and animal-staff course online through the University of Tennesee in June (registration is coming), and hope to be adding 1-2 more online trainings before then in April. Courses are 12 hours long, usually divided over 2-3 days. Limited to 10-20 participants. Trainings can also be held in-person for your group or organization, and we're working on grants! (Hey Maddie's Fund - help us get this training widespread for those working in the trenches every day to help our animals, improve access to care, and dealing with emotionally stressful situations involving animal behavior and health challenges!). Yes I'm passionate about this training - I've been a participant as well as a trainer, and I've seen it change lives, as well as my own.
