Thank you so much for workshopping Marigold! I'm also happy you enjoyed my question about how to frame long LOS as a positive vs a negative and the accompanying blurb about dogs getting their law degree and helping each other with their cases while in the pen.

Notes on Submitted Pets
Shirley at Queen Anne's County Animal Services
-
Great job keeping her in social media regularly!!
-
What is it about Shirley that makes you fall in love with her?
-
Market her on her days out - make sure she's wearing an 'adopt me' vest. Consider 'guerrilla marketing' when out and about.
-
Focus more on present and future than on past.
Jet at Michiana Humane Society
-
Kudos (hit applause button) for the regular marketing and doing a great job with the emotional connection!!
-
Great use of quotes and getting the reader to picture their life with her
-
Haven't tried video– highly recommend!
-
Really play up that she is a dog friendly cat - a lot of people with dogs would love a cat. As she likes dogs but not cats, maybe market her as a 'dog in a cat body' or a 'dog-cat'.
-
There are TONS of very large accounts dedicated to black cats on Instagram
Flora aka Catalina at Peace of Mind Dog Rescue
-
The hook sentence is great! Love that the good stuff is first
-
Get video and photos of her at the beach!!!!! This will help solidify the emotional connection you're building when you talk about her love for water. Use this material on social media and link in her online profile.
-
She's marketed regularly, which is awesome!
-
Ideally, each post should be different. This can be difficult when a pet is in foster, but I would think outside the box to find ways to get new photos and video at least every few weeks. Maybe a volunteer can do a parallel walk with them and snap photos, or someone she knows can take her on a field trip to a Sniff Spot, etc.
- Suggest putting the part about the previous adopter giving her up due to health after the first paragraph, as it tugs at the heartstrings and answers the question of "Did they give her up because of her behavior?" before it's asked
- Lean hard on the fact that she's dog friendly - maybe post as 'does your dog need a dog?'
- As she's in foster, make sure she's got an 'adopt me' vest when she's on walks and out in public.
Mardi at Brown County Humane Society
-
Great job on bio's hook sentence!
-
Social media posts– great job posting regularly! Suggest saying something different about her each time-- maybe a quote from one of her staff or volunteer BFFs, a story about something she did that day, etc.
- Has she been on field trips, overnights? Find someone to get her off the shelter grounds and get marketing material-- photos, vidoes, etc. in different places and maybe on someone's couch (this will help PAs imagine what she'd look like on their couch!)
Toffee at Hurst Animal Services
Mocha at Williamson County Animal Shelter
Marigold @ Santa Fe Animal Shelter
-
She's only posted on FB once– keep soliciting field trips & getting her off-site for marketing opps!
-
Love that you used a quote from her field trip person!
-
More video content can help people connect with her
-
Photo on her profile is very good! If it's possible to add more, esp. of her with other people! The photo from her field trip where she's in the car looking blissful getting petted might be a good one-- so cute!
Kilo @ Maui Humane Society
Elle at Austin Pets Alive!
-
The first 2 sentences of her last bio paragraph are GOLD. Reading the first sentence, you can help but picture her head under your hand. This might make a better hook (first sentence of bio):
"Elle is very affectionate with her friends and seeks their love by putting her head under their hands. She's a professional cuddler, as she knows there's no size limit for lap dogs."
- Great variety & quality of photos & video on her profile!
- Great job posting her regularly on social media!
- If possible, ask one of her favorite people to take her on a field trip to get some pics off-site
- As she is APA!'s longest stay dog, reach out to news outlets like Joyful, iheartdogs.com and Cuddle Buddies to ask if they'll do a feature article on her
- Suggest trying an all-positive social media post that links back to her online profile for people who want to find out more

On Thursday, November 7, 2024, join Maddie's® Monthly Foster Connection at 12pm PT/3pm ET, Finnegan Dowling, Shelter Program and Engagement Manager, will be discussing your favorite long stay pets to identify strategies for marketing them to fosters and adopters.
Register for the session so that you can receive notifications about upcoming webcasts and participate in discussions after the webcast.
Webcast Description:
With every shelter stuffed to bursting, finding fosters and adopters is crucial. For some pets this is simple, but others are harder to place. In this workshop, we'll discuss your favorite long stay pets to identify strategies for marketing them to fosters and adopters. This workshop is not just for foster staff– it's open to anyone who is interested in marketing pets who are harder to place!
Make sure to bring information about your own favorite or most challenging long stay. We'll choose several and work through them together, discussing what works, what doesn't work and some innovative new ways that can get extra attention and help them find the right home. We'll discuss how we talk about behavioral and health challenges in bios and social media and discuss the optimal ways to be frank about issues while also not deterring potential adopters. We'll look at different social media channels and how to optimize content about those pets for those channels to get the message across and help these pets put their best paw forward. Be prepared for a fun, frank and useful webinar with a lot of workshopping and participation!
