Looking for input on the best intake protocol to treat all kinds of parasites

We have a protocol now, but part of that is pyrantel pamoate and several vets have indicated that its efficacy has been reduced and suggested a higher dosage per pound than what is indicated on the bottle for example.

I look forward to the feedback!

Our general intake process to address parasites for dogs is:

Fenbendazole (Panacur) at 50mg/kg for 3 days for most internal parasites
Praziquantel (Droncit) different tab dosage depending on size for tapeworm
Selemectin (Senergy) at 6mg /kg on a single dose for external parasites

For cats it's pretty much the same  except we more often use Revolution instead of Senergy and Pyrantel instead of Panacur.  We also do a Woods Lamp exam for clinical signs of ringworm and then isolate, culture, and lime sulfur anyone with a suspected positive.

There's some circumstantial evidence that Oxamniquine (Silmox) has synergistic activity with Droncit and can be effective at addressing tapeworm, flatworm/flukes better than either drug alone, but no animal-specific trials have taken place.

    Question:
why would you use revolution over Snergy since one's very inexpensive?

    I am really curious.

    thank you for any input.

    Katie,

Apologies, I checked with our Shelter Manager and we do use Senergy and Selarid for cats as well.  For us it's been a case of we're taking whatever we can get as often times individual products have been back ordered and when I looked in our database most recently we'd been administering Revolution.

Do you see the same efficacy for Senergy as with Revolution? I know the active ingredient is the same, but we had a problem with some of the generics for Frontline a while back.

Is that the same protocol you use for cats?  We have a colony that every kitten we've pulled out of there has Giardia.

I am interested in this as well, as we struggle with giardia and coccidia. Ugh the poop!

We are having such a hard time giving Drontal to our cats, they do not like it. We often get one pill in and then with the larger cats, the second one is so hard, especially if they are feral we can't just pill them. I know there is a topical now Profender, wondering if any opinions about that here? Thanks!

We use it with success - at least as much success as we have with any other topical smelly med that trickles/tickles! But seriously, I have used it in my community cats just fine, far easier than a pill!

    Hello everyone:
Our deworming intake for kittens includes one dose of secnidazole for Giardia and three days of ponazuril for coccidia, in addition to pyrantel. Praziquantel is administered later if they come in with fleas. I'll try to attach our protocol!

Kirsten, what supplier do you use that has secnidazole?  I asked Midwest and they said they can't get it.

Also - your intake protocol for cats is excellent.  Would you be willing to share your dogs/puppies protocol?

Hi Diane - we were getting our secnidazole from RoadRunner compounding pharmacy. We've since switched to another compounding pharmacy for some of our drugs, but I'm not sure about this one (but I can check when I'm back at work next week!).

And yes to the puppy protocol!
