  • 1.  Presentations for children (girl scout/boy scout groups)

    We receive a lot of requests for Boy Scout and Girl Scout groups to come into our shelter, take a tour, and work on badge or merit requirements. We are working on getting our program in place to accommodate these groups and are considering a charge to come in for a presentation. Does anyone have expereince with this. What fees do you charge? Do you have any tips for running these programs?

    We had a girl scout group visit last month to work on their badge requirements. We separated the kids into smaller groups and had one group in our cat room, one in the multipurpose (hang out) room, and one group in the lobby. We are a small shelter, so our places to put kiddos is limited!  I walked around to each group and we talked about animal care, asked them about things like what kind of toys, food, etc., they think dogs and cats would like. Also asked how they should approach an animal, if they see a stray, etc.  We also have some puppies and kittens they visited, and then I let them all write down names they liked for them and we chose names out of a bucket for the pups and kits. One the way out, they walked through the office and made their own trail mix out of stuff on the counter. It was a lot, but also fun. Kind News website has little certificates I printed out so they could take with them and fill out their name. 

    We didn't charge any fee or ask for a donation.

    Hi! Animal shelters are super popular with scout troops! We also get a lot of these requests. This falls into the responsibilities of our Humane Education staff at MSPCA-Angell. (Located in Massachusetts.)     Delayed reply but I'll share our information too! We charge $5 per participant for Scout troops. We have lesson plans prepped for Boy Scouts' Critter Care Badge and Dog Care Badge, and Girl Scouts' Pet Badge and Animal Helpers Badge. I attached The Pet Badge itinerary and PowerPoint  as an example, along with our request form (includes waivers!) for them to submit.
