We find that we are needing to encourage pet owners to try to rehome their pet in their own home more often. We provide a courtesy post which puts the pet's profile on our website as well as the other adoption rescue sites that we are affiliated with, and post on our social media. It seems it is time to get a more structured system in place! Currently for rehoming, we are providing guidance to the original owner that there would not be an adoption fee, but there would be a rehoming fee of $100-$150, paid by the new adopter, which goes to our shelter. Management feels that dogs shouldn't go out as free as apparently the potential for giving the dog up for research or dog fighting is prevalent enough to be a concern.
If you have any type of rehoming program, do you charge a fee to the new adopter? Do you have any other advice to help with a program? We are in a very rural, low populated area with few resources for education, training, and affordable vet care within a couple of hours.
Thank you for any assistance!
