Hello everyone!

I just received an email stating that I was selected to attend the first class of the Fall 2025 SCS certification program. I was wondering if anyone else has taken the course and could give me an idea of what the scheduling is like for the classes? Is it more of a "go at your own pace," or are there set class times that you are required to attend? My supervisor is concerned that participating might take away from my daily work responsibilities.

It's much more of a go at your own pace. There are usually 2 virtual meetings but you can watch the recording if you aren't able to make it live. The rest of the content you go through at your own pace, although there are due dates, but you get like two weeks and can always ask for extensions.

The program is mostly at your own pace. Content is released each week during the six weeks of each course. We have 2 to 3 live meetings over the six weeks of each course. Each meeting is also recorded if you cannot attend live.

I'm hoping you can provide some guidance on additional resources similar to the program discussed here through Shelter Learniverse.  We have the option to create a career ladder within our animal care position after completion of a certification program. This would give our employees the option for more pay if they complete a course/program. Given that the applicants are limited for this program and need to be chosen, are you familiar with any similar options or courses that could be lumped together that cover similar information?

The Learniverse program has been around for some time now and is getting great reviews! 

In addition, National Animal Care & Control now has a 15-hour entirely self-paced program called Shelter Safe. It's not free, but it is very low cost. I've reviewed the content and believe it is very solid. You can read about it here: https://www.nacanet.org/animal-care-certification/

A free option is to put together a professional development portal on Maddie's University. The portal contains any courses you choose from the Maddie's University catalog you choose, and any manager of the portal can see who completes courses. The courses all carry CAWA/NACA CE, of course. From what I've heard, the structure usually involves a mix of set class sessions alongside some independent work, so it's not completely self-paced. Many participants mention that while it can be a bit of a time commitment, the organization is generally mindful that most attendees are balancing work responsibilities. Sometimes clear communication with your supervisor about the schedule helps ease those concerns.

Have you been given any preliminary schedule details in your welcome materials, or are you still waiting for that information? Also, finding ways to balance learning with your own self-care can really help make the process smoother.
