Happy New Year Everyone and thank you for the "Good Work" you all do! I wanted to SHARE my newest program I started called "SPAY IT FORWARD"....Because I do NOT get any funding from any local government, I had to Think SMARTER, Not HARDER! My forte is mathematics and money, former Wall Street TRADER NYSE/NASD....Now I live in remote TN, not exactly the same? YES, I get GRANTS and donations and most important "matching grants and donations"! I take ALL that funding, put it into a of couple of High Yield Savings, no restrictions and use that money as a tool to make more money! I have been able to fund FREE "SPAY IT FORWARD" on the interest alone, NEVER losing the principle amounts and ALWAYS seem to be able to pay for microchips, Genetic Breed ID and Doggie DNA...Its mathematical and brilliant. I have had the pleasure of offering my Community FREE S/N, microchips, Genetic Breed ID and Pets DNA! There are some very deserving Pet Owners (retired, elderly, etc) on limited budgets, there are families out there that would love to save a dog from "DEATH ROW" and/or pets that need to be re-homed and/or want A JOB! "SPAY IT FORWARD" continues to HELP this Community to make that happen! If you are looking for more fabulous funding ideas, feel free to reach out to me, Mary Murray, LadywiththeHuskies, PROOF4PETS & https://greeneanimalleague.org

    Hi Mary;

This is excellent- it sounds like a program after my own heart.  If you don't mind, please go to www.unitedspayalliance.org to make sure your program is listed correctly on our website.  At the United Spay Alliance we are building up to February which is Feline Fix by Five month.

One thing that I think the smaller organizations need to learn more about is how to receive investable funds and bequests.  There is going to be a huge transfer of wealth over the next decade and charitable giving is a big part of that.  The benefits of donating stock directly to a non-profit is game changing for both parties, but my sense is groups don't know how to ask for these types of donations or set up the brokerage accounts to do so.  Is that information you might want to share with this group?

Thank you for all that you do.  I hope you have connected with Julie Jacobson at Spay Tennessee!

We also ran a "Spay it Forward" Program.   Ours was an online and retail store donation box fundraiser for the full month of August where we raised funds for our Free Spay/Neuter Program to help those who can't afford to sterilize their pet.  I can't figure out how to upload photos to this site for some reason so I'm including some links about the program.

Thank you for your kind words, call me anytime 423-972-6760, I got more financial tools "up my sleeve"! No matter the size of your group/organization be careful with the brokerage accounts, some can end up costing you money!  Yes, I met Julie Jacobson, she is referred to as "Spay Zilla", attended her conference back in 2010, maybe?...A really long time ago.....I did NOT reveal my trader/desk quant resume, I just attended to listen and learn...I also wanted to SHARE with you on "paying cost" for events, I love that financial tool as well! Again, thank you for ALL the "good work" you do! Mary Murray, VIE, Inc, LadywiththeHuskies, PROOF4PETS & https://greeneanimalleague.org

Hi, Stacy, I live in Memphis, and my mission is to recruit dog fosters for our shelter, Memphis Animal Services. That's the short story. Our shelter is terrible at community outreach, and last year they fired the 2 Vets on staff. We naturally have a high stray population, and it is worse in low income areas. My goal is to gather the resources to provide free spay/neuter services for this low income area.

(I looked at your website, and there's just one  reduced rate s/n clinic that's way overbooked; the Humane Society ( not listed) also offers discounted s/n, but we  aren't able to  schedule appointments  for the same reason- high demand).

The shelter is not interested in doing anything besides euthanize dogs. It's run by the city. We ( volunteers) want to organize our own s/n event this year, and i was wondering if you knew any groups that would helps us? I'm not a 501c3 organization, but I can get a local Rescue to "sponsor" this event.

    Thank you,

    Catherine

Hi, I too am not a 501C3 organization. I'm  Animal Control in Massachusetts without a shelter. The community I serve has older pet lovers, low income and a large community cat population. Massachusetts has good low cost spay and neuter, unfortunately, they either run out of slots or the people can't travel to where they are.

Being a municipal organization, it is very hard to raise money. I'm very interested in raising money so we can hire one of the Vet Vans to come to my town. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks Jeanie

Hi, I'm familiar with HYSA. I have one in my name. When you set up your account, did you set it up as a charity or under your name? I'm not registered as a charity, and if I do fundraising through my organization, I'm concerned with the tax implication of receiving money. I basically need some kind of escrow account where I can distribute funds to rescues ( 501c3). Is your organization tax-exempt?

    Thanks!

I am interested in learning about grant funds for a spay clinic. I live in a rural town in Eastern OR and the mindset here is to not spend a dime on animals, let them roam, procreate and shoot them when they are an inconvenience, sick, old, injured. They do not take them for vet care, nor is it financially a possibility to many of the migrants and old farmers.
People in this town are mostly low income. We have a huge dumping problem, which includes newborn puppies and kitties. It is very depressing.
I run a 501 but receive no Government funding and donations are minimal, certainly not enough to be able to hire a vet and do a mobile spaying/neuter clinic.
Any info on grants would be very much appreciated.

I would recommend trying the Binky Foundation. Their information states they help start ups.

Our rescue is a little over a year old. We are foster based without government funding.  We are also in the early  stages of securing land to build a spay and neuter clinic. We do not have a veterinarian on staff, as no one is paid. We are all volunteers. Would this grant from the Binky Foundation help us with this? The property will also have cottages for dogs and cats.  So it would feel more like a home environment and relieve some of the stress.

As a former Binky Foundation grant recipient, I can tell you that it may be considerable  work to apply (depending on how you've prepared for your organization), a small financial award if granted, and a valuable outcome for your organization to build on, in addition to the grant money.

Use of the grant funds would be at your discretion.

    Good luck!

CORRECT and then ask for "Matching Funds"! Start with your Board of Directors and/or supporters you have! That makes it "DOUBLE" your financing and/or start ASKING your Community!

This sounds great!  Very happy that you have found a way to keep it going.  We started a low cost spay/neuter clinic this year from a grant that we received from a local resource.  I'm really trying to find ways to make this sustainable,  I have looked into additional grants and what to do with them.

I am glad to hear such a great response to my sharing of my financial building tools! I must remind everyone, I am currently NOT a Certified Financial Planner and I have NOT renewed my Series 7 (NYSE/NASD)...That being said, technically, I can only share with you some avenues I personally made for my OWN 501-c-3 non-profit! I do know, I am limited as to what & how much I can SHARE, NOT being Certified as this juncture! Any Certified Financial Planner will tell you the same statement, that is why I am ONLY a CONSULTANT! Following the rules of thumb, we ALL NEED: 1. Fosters 2. Families 3. Finances 4. Facilities 5. S/N 6. VOLUNTEERS!  KNOWING these steps helps you to master the "ACCOUNTABILITY", which I am an AVID PROMOTER of....Should any of you, participants, would like to speak with me directly, I am always available and pleased to know I have sparked your curiosity and continue to PUSH for IMPROVEMENT! The pets need us to do this! Thanks, again for ALL you do....Mary Murray, LadywiththeHuskies, PROOF4PETS & https://greeneanimalleague.org

I called you today........I apply for grants and ASK for "MATCHING Grants/Donations"....There is a certain amount I put in to several High yield Savings accounts, NO restrictions, NO fees....You have 2 be real careful on who, what, where, when & how you select, there is a bank paying 4.8 % Interest, but there is a $35 fee every time you liquidate, I do NOT use those, nor do I do/allow CD's and/or US Treasuries because it RESTRICTING time wise, fee wise and liquidation costs....My proclivity is to use the money I have as a "tool" to make more money.....So unless YOU and/or YOUR organization is RICH, seek a Certified Financial Planner, as I am NOT currently Certified, at this juncture!  I can ONLY share with you what I have done for my OWN 501-c-3 non-profit...Feel  Free 2 reach out to me via gmail and or 1-423-972-6760.....Mary Murray, LadywiththeHuskies, PROOF4PETS & https://greeneanimalleague.org

Thank you! Sorry- on the phone with my doctor.
I do read the "fine print" on HYSA. I've invested from my funds & am responsible for any financial decisions for my mother, so I always do my research. I've had a FIR guy for decades. That's for my money and not my organization. Those funds are separate.
I think that I'll have to apply for 501c3 status so I can receive funds and distribute. What a pain, but I'm going against the grain in Memphis by offering payment to new fosters. Our volunteers are angry at me for offering money. I do not engage in drama. I will do what's necessary to recruit new Fosters, provide supplies and support them. That's my mission.
Thanks for your advice, Mary! Cheers, Catherine
