Summertime fundraisers!

  • 1.  Summertime fundraisers!

    Posted 05-12-2025 11:10 AM

Hi everyone. I am volunteering with a new Friends of the shelter group where I live, and being in Texas, many outdoor fundraisers during the summer are out of the question! This is a new org, and we only have shelter pets at events that the shelter is also at (which are also very few during the summer)... I have a list of restaurant fundraisers to look into, but does anyone have an other creative ideas for indoor fundraisers or awareness events for a new nonprofit?

    Thank you!

This was so low effort, so maybe not exactly what you're looking for, but we recently did a "Change for the Animals" fundraiser where we simply asked people to bring us their change jars.  In two weeks, we received just a hair under $1,000! We are a pretty small shelter, so that meant a lot to us.

That was in February and people are still bringing us their change, just today in fact.  Good luck!

    I LOVE that idea!
We've done a donation yard sale. People bring us things and we put them out - no prices on anything - and people donate whatever they want/can. We made about $1200. I will say that it was a bit of work gathering the donations and sorting out the trash, setting up, and getting rid of the items not taken. For our little group, though, it was pretty profitable. We did it in a carport/garage, but it could be done inside.

We have  done YARD SALES  too.  It is a lot of work,  sorting thru the donations, the " junk" etc. but we Always make some money and we  get rid of a lot of our own junk. Whatever we don't sell,  we  donate back to other local  shelters.  Every little bit helps !

I agree this is a great idea. Our foundation is planning a summer event and I think we could implement this as well.

    Thank you for sharing!

My response will probably be considered low key as well, but we are a newly established rescue and had to come up with something on the fly, that could be maybe get around virtually and reshared to reach more donors, since we don't have a big base of donor support just yet, and no in person events scheduled in the near future.

Backstory - we took on a far bigger case than what we initially thought it would be, our 2nd week of opening and becoming operational!  We took in a mom and 6 nursing (3 week old) pups from an urgent euth list shelter, 2 counties over.  Sure, we knew all would need standard vetting, puppy series vacs and spay/neuters for all, and we were prepared and had the resources for that, but we got blind sided by lots of other unknowns and unexpected illnesses, sicknesses and diseases and critical puppies!  So funds/resources went out very quickly.  So now fast forward 2 weeks later - we are all stable and doing good and getting healthy, but now we still have to plan for the expenses of fully vetting and spays/neutering this whole family and all the normal routine stuff that we were expecting to have to do.  So in comes our current fundraiser!  I have an active and simple "Color by Number" paw print, virtual fundraiser that I just started and posted on our socials yesterday.  1 color card/paw per each dog, but broken up in smaller amounts, for our donors to help us "color in the paws", for solid footing/foundation for these babies.  We  just activated this event, we have had 2 donors in less than 24 hours, but no idea how successful it will really be.  I have attached 2 different versions.  They look the same, but they each have slightly different verbiage (Mom vs Puppy).

Hi Shannon, thanks for helping this momma and her pups! I have an idea regarding spay/neuter and any other necessary care: the University of Georgia's College of Veterinary Medicine might be able to assist. I work for Midwestern University's CVM (in AZ, which is too far from you), and the clinic collaborates with rescues and shelters to provide spay/neuter, vaccines, and other medical care. The school views this as a way to help the community, offer additional educational experiences to students, and reduce costs so rescues can assist more animals. It could be worthwhile to reach out to them if you're close enough to bring the dogs there. Unfortunately, I don't have a point of contact, but I'm happy to ask around for one if you'd like.

Thank you for that!  That would be fantastic.  It is not too awfully far from our home base.  The county they are located in, is actually a county we plan to grow into helping in the near future, as they are just a few doors over, so to speak!  :)

Shannon, this is SUCH a great idea. Are donors picking colors? And then will you post the colored in paw print once everything's colored in?

    Hi Siobhan,

Yes, we post them as we update them and try to keep them going until that paw is filled all the way in.  Donors are picking the correlating amount(s) and section(s) of the paw that they'd like colored in to help, and also picking which specific paw/doggie they are supporting.  I have been coloring them in with one color - but that is a great idea, I could also offer to let them pick a color too.  :)

    Hi Everyone,

We just held a yard sale/garage sale and asked the commuity for donations of goods to sell. We made almost $2,000 with all the items we had, plus the generous donations. Neighbors and animal lovers came by to donate $5 to $100 to help. People donated old tools, furniture, clothing, dishes, etc.. We sold almost everything, plus a wonderful artist donated pottery which I put on eBay, Poshmark and Mercari. We are slowing bringing in a little each week with online sales, and it's all adding up!

You could ask your local charity organization to use their space? Knights of Columbus, etc..!

    Good luck, everyone!
