hi all, 

does anyone work with therapy dogs in a shelter? I was thinking about getting my therapy dogs, Yankee Doodle, into a shelter to help with other animals that may need companionship as well as visiting the staff for stress reduction.

We have a Canine Ambassador program at our shelter where, essentially, well-behaved and temperament-tested dogs can volunteer as Ambassadors for shelter animals and attend events, visit schools/nursing homes/etc, and other activities that aren't adoption-focused events in lieu of our shelter pets. Since we don't know the shelter pets as well (and they're already going through a stressful time!), this allows us to include animals and be confident the dog enjoys the activity, is house-trained, etc. It focuses more outward on programs though versus internal for staff/shelter pets.
