Purple Paws for Peace here. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Placer County, California, and we're seeking professional insight from those with experience in canine behavior and training-particularly with dogs who have experienced trauma.
For those unfamiliar with our work, we provide emergency housing for the pets of domestic violence survivors so survivors can safely enter shelter and escape dangerous or potentially life‑threatening situations. While we are very comfortable working with animals, we are continually learning how to support pets who have endured trauma. Our approach centers on patience, consistency, and compassion, paired with firm, appropriate correction when needed.
We recently received two dogs who are displaying significant behavioral challenges. Both are friendly and affectionate with humans, which is a tremendous advantage. However, the female shows notable aggression toward other dogs. One of our boarding partners is assisting with her training, but they can only accommodate one dog at a time.
The male, whom we are training ourselves, is unneutered and has a very dominant personality. It's clear that neither dog has received structured training in the past. His breed mix-Cane Corso and Husky-means he is large, strong, and highly intelligent.
During walks, he pulls constantly. I've worked with pullers before and have always been able to correct the behavior quickly by shortening the leash and keeping the dog at my side. In this case, he reacts by jumping toward me and turning abruptly. I stop, have him sit, and reset before continuing, but he remains extremely stubborn and physically powerful. He is, in short, a handful, and I am a 6'0 male and 200 pounds. Even for me, he's a handful.
We would greatly appreciate any professional guidance, techniques, or training strategies you can offer. While I have experience, I have never encountered a dog quite this strong‑willed, and I want to ensure we are supporting him safely, compassionately, and effectively.
