  • 1.  Upcoming changes to Meta's fundraising tools: will it impact your org?

    Posted 08-31-2023 12:41 PM

We received this email from Facebook/Meta earlier this week. At first we thought it was spam, but now we see it's legit. Took a while to read through the whole thing!

    Hello,

We are making changes to the way we support nonprofits on Facebook and Instagram. Starting October 31, 2023, we are partnering exclusively with PayPal Giving Fund (PPGF) to support donations benefiting nonprofits in the United States and will no longer support donation payouts through Network for Good. Separately, Meta will no longer be covering third party processing fees on donations. At this time, no further action is required from you. However, if you're not eligible to receive donated funds from PPGF, please use this support form or enroll with PayPal Giving Fund.

Here are other changes that may affect the way you raise money:

    - How donations are handled. Currently, your nonprofit receives donation payouts from Network for Good. Starting on October 31, Network for Good will no longer distribute new donations made to your nonprofit. Instead, PPGF will receive donations benefiting your nonprofit and grant funds to your nonprofit, subject to their policies.

    - PPGF payout timelines. Funds distributed by PPGF will be paid out according to PPGF's timelines. For PPGF-enrolled nonprofits, PPGF will distribute funds within 15-45 days. For PPGF-unenrolled nonprofits, PPGF will distribute funds with a check within 90 days. You can learn more about how to enroll with PPGF.

    - Donation receipts. PPGF, rather than Meta, will provide donors with the official donation receipt that can be used for tax purposes. Meta will only provide a confirmation for donations, which donors can find under Orders and payments in the settings menu.

    - Donation payment processing fees. Meta currently covers third party payment processing fees for donations to nonprofits and will continue to do so until 5 PM PT on October 31. After that, Meta will no longer cover such fees and donations will be subject to a payment processing fee charged by the third party payment processor. Learn more about donation payment processing fees.

    - Changes to the donation flow. We understand payment processing fees are a big change that can impact your organization. To assist in this transition, we are modifying our donation flow to provide donors the option to increase their donation amount to cover the processing fees.

    - Recurring donations and giving campaigns. New recurring donations and recurring giving campaigns will no longer be supported starting September 15, 2023. Network for Good will distribute all recurring donations until 5 PM PT on October 31, according to its payout timelines. We know how important recurring donations are to nonprofits, and we hope to bring this feature back in the future.

We deeply value your partnership and will continue to be proactive about sharing information on product updates and new features. Learn more about all the changes to Metas fundraising tools and what it means for your nonprofit. Or, learn more about eligibility and requirements for fundraising tools.

    Thanks,
    Meta Social Impact Team

I'm curious what, if any impact it will have on your organization. The fact that PPGF is not going to cover processing fees anymore will certainly impact us during our major online fundraising drives this holiday season. Other than that, I'm wondering how other people are feeling about the changes. Thanks for your input!

This landed in my in-box today:

Meta and the PayPal Giving Fund: A Guide to Facebook Payment Processing for Nonprofits

The biggest thing you need to pay close attention to if your nonprofit currently fundraises on Facebook: All pre-requisite requirements must be completed by each nonprofit by October 31st, 2023 at 5 PM PT to maintain Giving Tools eligibility moving forward.

Here's the checklist that your nonprofit needs to complete in order to stay eligible, with the direct "review" link working for pages that are currently on the Facebook New Page Experience:

We received the same notification. Luckily we are already registered with Paypal giving fund.  Even though it will cost us a bit having to pay these fees I think it is a still a good option for easy fundraising. Many of our supporters create birthday fundraisers for us on FB.  They will be adding an option for the donor to cover the fees. Our website donors who use our paypal button, most times will cover the fees.

Thanks for posting this. I hadn't heard about it, but it definitely looks to be a bug change, especially with the shift in guidelines and payout wait times. We've tried bypassing that by pushing people to our donate page on the official website, but I'm curious to look more into the pros and cons of this. Hopefully, this doesn't have a negative impact on your nonprofit!

    You're so welcome.

We've had some success with folks donating via Paypal without even really trying too hard to promote that option. But like you, we'd rather them go through our website. Paypal's reporting features are lacking, but hey we'll take donations where we can get 'em!

We were very disappointed to learn about this. We're already signed up for PPGF so the transition is not an issue. But for such a huge, wealthy entity to stop helping nonprofits is very sad, but it's been developing for awhile. Facebook/Meta used to offer matches on Giving Tuesday donations, but they dwindled over time; then last year they stopped and switched to small rewards for recruiting monthly donors. ( Which makes the cessation of the monthy giving option strange, but I know it's because PPGF doesn't have this option--only regular PayPal does).  Also I think the new fee of 1.99% +.49 per transaction is charged by Meta,  because as I  understand it PPGF does not charge any fees.

We have raised a ton of money on Facebook so we have no plans to stop. We've found that when we process adoptions in ShelterLuv, most donors cover those processing fees when asked, so we are hopeful that they will also cover the Meta fees when asked. We're going to have to contact our recurring donors and request that they migrate to ShelterLuv for monthly giving.

I have no idea what this will portend for Giving Tuesday this year.

Yes, more of Meta's greed, it's sickening! We've already struggled so much this year, I don't know what this will do. I'm so angry I want to quit Facebook and Instagram altogether, but I'll wait and see what happens. I'm definitely looking for another solution (already quit Twitter, not going back). We get almost no engagement on either platform anyway, so people just aren't seeing our posts; can't expect people to donate when they don't see the posts. It's all very frustrating.
