Valentine's Day Promotions

  • 1.  Valentine's Day Promotions

    Posted 01-09-2023 12:44 PM
    Hi everyone!

I was wondering if anyone would be willing to share any successful past Valentine's Day fundraisers/promotions that they have done. Last year, for a donation, individuals could have a custom valentine with a picture of one of our pets sent to their sweetheart. The valentine was sent via email and via text message. We would like to try something different this year.

Any ideas are welcome and I thank you in advance for sharing!

    Thanks again,

Hi Stephanie. For Valentine's Day  we are thinking of promoting our bonded pairs of cats that are available to adopt, and asking our followers to share photos of their cats together. (We are a cat-only rescue.)

We have used the whole dating app thing. We put up the pics and a bio of each animal "looking for a home."  "Swipe right or swipe left" and we did animalmatch.com

In 2021, we did a "speed dating" promotion 02/13-02/14 where you could complete a quiz to find your perfect match. We set up a 45 minute window where you could come in to meet the animals we thought would best suit your needs based on the answers to the quiz. It was very popular and adopters had so much fun finding their new pet through this process. We even got a shout out on Good Morning America!

The SPCA of Brevard Adoption Center's "Not a Fan of your Ex" Valentine's fundraiser in 2020 was one of the funniest promos I've ever seen. So clever. It looks like it was quite successful too -- the FB post says it raised $1,700, received 614 comments and 2.6k shares! A screenshot of the post is below.

@Lacie Davis, @susan naylor, @Brooke Valet, @Veronica Vera, kudos to your team for coming up with this hilarious idea! Did you do that fundraiser in 2021 & 2022, too? Any Valentine's Day promo plans for 2023?

I'd like to thank you for sharing your graphics! I used several of these in a Valentine's Day: Love it or Leave It (in the Litterbox)" fundraiser for our cat rescue, Eden Animal Haven (https://www.facebook.com/edenanimalhaven).  Although we had several litterbox donations, we had any more for our kitty kissing booth. We raised $800  in all!

We made a booth from a cardboard box and supplies from Dollar Tree, and took photos of some of our cats inside it. As "kiss" donations came in, we edited the photos to include the person's name and posted them with a comment on which cat was sending kisses. We had about 3 times as many kisses as litterbox donors. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=508840384763430&set=pb.100069124196395.-2207520000.&type=3

    Hi Stephanie!

We have set up a Doggy Date Day where people can donate $25 to bring their significant other to the shelter to socialize with dogs for an hour! So far it seems to be gaining a lot of interest! We also debated on even doing Spaghetti Dinners with shelter animals over the weekends in February, but due to lack of volunteers nixed the idea.

We also have a "Spread the Love" Campaign  where people can donate $10 for a Valentine to be sent to someone from an animal of their choice.

I've been toying with the idea of a Bring Your Dog on a Date (with Valentine themed Photo Opp booth) since I know so many women and some men who have replaced their former spouses with a furry friend. We have a local brewery that has an outdoor area but, unfortunately it is currently covered in 8' of snow. Thought about a Kissing Booth with dog featured in it too as an added fun- fundraising idea. A silent auction at the event with dog and cat themed baskets full of goodies, supplies, bling colors etc…  I'm just a single volunteer and all 3 of the animal organizations have no resources with which to launch such an event or build a committee to create it.

    Barbara,

I posted under "Great Event Idea". Years ago a friend  I threw a singles party for pet owners. It was a smash! If I did over I would have an inside outside venue where everyone with dogs could socialize and bring their animals. We had owner pet look alike contest. Everyone had such fun. It could be done any time of year but think Vday would be great since so many singles l now!

The first thing that popped into my head was personalized valentine cards like the ones kids use in elementary school and give to their classmates! People could order valentine cards with their own pets on them and a cute valentines day saying to give to their friends and family or classmates.

Secondly, it would be cute to have a doggie spaghetti dinner like in Lady and the Tramp. It could be mixed with others' ideas of doggie dating as well!

    Just some thoughts hahah. Goodluck!

I have also floated around the idea of "selling" paper hearts donors can write their name on. Simple but a little over done I think but we work with what we have. lol.

We are doing a fundraiser "pictures with cupid".  We have a red velvet couch that we will take out to our dog park and have cupid in a toga with a play bow and arrow that people can have their dogs pics taken with for a $20 donation.  We find that these types of photo events bring in lots of donations.   We also have food trucks attend and get a 20% give back from them.

    Posted 01-18-2023 09:25 AM
Last year I organized a small fundraiser for Valentine's Day that I thought would just be fun to do. It was just an unoriginal 'How many candy hearts are in the jar?' I counted out over 300-400 hearts and gave to 6 businesses that agreed to participate. (1 of them didn't tell me until I went to pick up their jar and money that they had decided not to do it.) Prizes included gift certificates for massages, a restaurant, and a big stuffed Teddy Bear that I bought just for this fundraiser. It turned out to be a flop. We're in a very small county in rural Montana and let's just say participation was lacking. I had given the businesses instructions, and they each had a heart decorated bucket for the money and guesses to go in. It was 'One buck for one guess'. I raised only $50 and had more guesses than I should have so I don't even know if the people that won had actually put in their dollar. Some kids just write down '20' for their guess so those were easy to throw out when I checked the guesses.

Hmmm, you wanted successful fundraiser ideas. Maybe some others have been able to make something like this successful? Probably our next fundraiser will be more of a social one in a local brewery. The brewery had reached out to me to see if we wanted to do something like a pint a buck, and then have a rep from our shelter talk about what we do. That sounds like it could be fun - and not too much work.

For just a $5 donation, you can get your own retriPOOtion (your reDUMPtion, even).

For the speed dating event, our Marketing Coordinator created graphics for adoptable pets at the shelter with their picture and a few quips about their personality that looked like the dating app. We focused on longer term residents. People could fill out an attached questionnaire that we used to narrow down pet candidates for them to meet over a two day period broken down into timed slots they could sign up for. This event was featured on Good Morning America and CNN and was super fun to do!

We did a Valentine's Day fundraiser with Kitty Town Coffee (https://www.kittytowncoffee.com/). They sell different varieties of coffees (ground or whole bean) and donate 20% of proceeds to us. We promoted it as Valentine's Day gifts. Our first try netted us almost $400. Not a lot, but easy and fun. Each blend of coffee is named for a different cat.

We're a small feline rescue and are doing a cuddle a cat sale where $14 is taken off the adoption fees from Monday to Friday that week. As long as they submit an application during that time frame, the special will be applied at time of adoption. We have 5 kitties who have adoption fee sponsorships ranging from $25-100 and the special will also be applied to them.
Starting the week after Valentines from the 18th to the 28th we're doing another adoption fee special titled, " giving our teenagers an allowance," cause we have so many kittens around 6mo-10mo old who've had zero interest so we'll be taking $25 off their adoption fee.

    Hello-
This will be our first Valentine's fundraiser so am appreciative of all these great ideas! We are going to hold an adoption event the week before at a local pet food/supply store that has a good amount of foot & paw traffic.  We're going to make paw-print cards using pet-safe coloring and either we or the donor can decorate the matte.  Our logo sticker will go on the back of the card.
    Hope it's successful!

    Hello!

We just held a Valentines Blind Date with a dog to promote our foster day trips program which we are just getting started. We had people sign up via a google form (https://forms.gle/6r94BsL58myzPtxN9) and we used the info provided to match our volunteers with a blind date.  We created dating profiles for the dogs selected and included it in the folder provided to the volunteers to share their info with anyone interested.

It was a pretty successful day, we were able to get out 17 dogs for the day. One turned into a long term foster, and one got adopted later that day due to his day trip notes! Almost all of the volunteers who attended signed up to take another dog out next weekend. We hope to be able to continue to grow this program more. Blind dates seemed like a great way to kick it off!

This is our first year hosting a  Valentine's adoption event for our longer term animals and hard to adopt animals. Our event is being held the weekend before Valentine'a at our local PetSmart. We will be having our adult cats, senior dogs, and harder to adopt breeds such as our pitbull / american staffordshire terrier mixes. We decided to this event this way because during our larger scale adoption events, these categories of animals just get over looked quite often. We had one of our volunteers take super cute Valentine's  pics of our animals attending to gain interest!

I wanted to come up with something that wouldn't be a lot of work to manage - please see video (I hope it shows up). In case it doesn't load, it's a short survey asking people to donate $5 if they prefer big dogs as pets, $5 if little dogs, $5 if prefer cats, $5 if can't choose and $20 if choose all 3. We're running it for a week. Donations aren't required to be counted for their preference. At the end of the survey, I'll tally it up and make a post of what the results are. I doubt it will bring much money in but I had fun creating the posts.

We are also doing an e-card that people can purchase for $10 and have it sent to a person of their choice, but it will include a video of some of our adoptable dogs, puppies, cats and kittens.  We are using canva to create the e-card, but our CRM won't allow us to send the e-card without creating a profile for each individual who the card will be going to (we didn't get permission from these individuals since this is a "surprise" card). That being said, we are sending each e-card individually via email, which is cumbersome. If anyone has ideas for an easier way to do this, please let me know. So far, the fundraiser is doing well. We've had many people indicate that the price is nice because its cheap enough that they want to send multiple e-cards at a time.

Our volunteer Jenna, our volunteer photographer Salem and our volunteer graphic designer Miko put together a campaign to help us raise funds with our original Artists with Animals Mini-Print Notecards. These cards have sustained our work for years, this promo has a Valentine feel. Thanks to the many fine art photographers who donate their images to help us. Featured is a famous photo taken by Terry O'Neill of David Bowie for Diamond Dogs.

I had a thought over the weekend to send e-cards and came across a website called https://www.dontsendmeacard.com -- a platform for non-profits to upload e-cards for fundraising purposes. They're UK-based but can adjust currencies. No fees to join, and links to PayPal. We're creating a bunch of cheesy valentines in Canva to upload / I signed up today, and they say it usually takes around 24 hours for approval...seems like an easy promo to run without much leg work!

We're doing an Adopt a Sweetheart event!  We decorated our adoption center, put posters up all over town, hit up social media and the local radio station.  We're doing half-priced adoptions and inviting the community in.  Can't wait!

I just learned about GivingGrid.com. They have several platforms and you can use them for more than just Valentine's day.

I decided to do the name in the litter box idea because I thought it was funny and cute. While it got some laughs, it did not bring in any donations and was a total flop :(

I also did the litter bow for V-day. It brought in maybe $50 and got a lot of laughs. I did add a few extra names to make it look good so maybe it will be better next year. Also, fundraising is down overall so it is not surprising.

Thank you everyone for weighing in and sharing your Valentine's promos. We ultimately went with a dual promotion. People could donate and have a personalized E-Card sent to their loved one on Valentine's Day.

We also did a Kiss or Diss promotion that is going through the end of the month. People can choose to get a Kiss, and we put your special someone's name on a kiss that we posted on different kennels. The Diss was that we would write your 'not-so-special' someone's name in a litter pan.

We did not have as much success as we had thought, but we also were unable to really promote it as much as we would have liked.
