  • 1.  Veterinary Assistance Programs: What are your client limits per pet? Monetary and #times?

    Posted 13 days ago

We cover 50% of bill for low-income clients at partner vet clinics. & have a client still asking for assistance after 4 visits/1 year. Her dog has a seizure disorder. She has not "been able to pay for his medication" the last 2 times.
Of course we don't want him seizing again.

Hi Charlene,  we don't have a program like this yet, but it is one I want later down the line. The way you worded it makes it feel like you don't believe that she can't pay for his meds. Is this what makes you hesitant to want to pay for it again? What has she done that makes you feel like she can pay but doesn't want to? That question sounds accusatory, but it's not. I'm interested to understand and I'm not sure how to word it a different way.

I understand that setting limits could be necessary because we as rescues don't have unlimited sources, but I would be concerned that setting limits could endanger pets from not getting the help they needed. It's similar to my mom asking if we put limits on how much we will spend on an individual animal in our care. How can that be done if the goal is to rescue them and give them the care needed until they find forever home?

im new to this so please educate me where I am wrong. Thank you!

Thank you for your reply. There's more to the story than I initially divulged....

We give her pet food every 2 months (50 lb  bags) and have helped her on 4 separate occasions within a 1 year period for veterinary care  we have also paid for her dog's seizure medication  for at least 2 months.

We are a small organization and have limited, but growing funding. We have to help others in the community also, and can't indefinitely continue helping.
We had expected the pet-owner to be able to pay $15 per month for medication by now (over 1 yr later) .

We are looking on advice (from other existing programs?) for monetary & time  limits so resources can be shared with others in the community.

We don't usually have repetitive requests for assistance, but have had 2 pet owners who are requesting help on a regular basis, which isn't how
