  • 1.  Volunteer Question

    Posted 15 days ago

We are a shelter with 700 volunteers. We currently use Messenger for our communications; we have a Big Dog Group, Small Dog Group, etc., to send out information like shifts that still need help, or if someone calls out and we need to send an "SOS" for help, etc.

We are trying to find a new platform to us, but would like to keep it free of charge. Can you tell me what you use, and what the major benefits are?  We are having issues with Messenger not allowing us (Admins) to remove inappropriate comments; we can remove them for ourselves, but not the entire group. That, and people who don't want anything to do with Facebook. So, we thought we'd start looking around.

    Thanks, Bonny

I love discord, and it is free! Slack is fantastic also. Unfortunately, our volunteers are split with half wanting a better way to communicate and half refusing to use anything but email. I would love to see how other shelters navigate this!

Thanks for your feedback!! It really is difficult to get everyone on the same page, lol.

One of the very small rescues I volunteer with, Novy's Ark, has a WhatsApp group for all of the foster parents. It works for us.

The shelter I foster for just started using an app called Band that is free and provides a lot of tools for admins: https://www.band.us/about/features

I definitely prefer it over email since you get a nice push notification when an animal is available for foster and there's a chat feature to allow all fosters to communicate with each other. It also allows you as an admin to remove comments, approve them before they go up, or restrict who can comment on posts. It's very easy to use as a foster and once a foster animal finds placement, they remove the post to keep the feed clean and tidy.
