One option is using Tyvek paper. There are some limitations - it's expensive and doesn't work with all printer types, but if you don't have a lot of turnover in your animal population, it could make sense. It's waterproof and doesn't fade quickly. You can order through Amazon and through the major office product companies. Just be sure your printer is compatible with the material.

You can also laminate (hot or cold) but that also gets expensive if you have high turnover (material and labor cost)
The plastic sleeves work well - consider mounting them upside down so moisture and debris don't fall inside.
