Hi,
Thx to everyone who was able to join today's webcast about Accomplishing the Goal of Successful Outcomes. There was one question we didn't have time for. Here is Dr. Carley's response. She'll be sharing some additional links tomorrow.
What qualifications would you say are needed to provide Post-Adoption Behavioral support? Would day-to-day in shelter animal handling suffice, or would you suggest specific training or classes, etc.
- Great question! Yes, day-to-day in shelter handling staff can be useful! You just want to make sure that the person communicating/emailing the adopter knows the animal and/or the specific behaviors they are asking about, that they know how to explain interventions and find great resources online. I also recommend local trainers in the area, after I have spoken with them to learn about their training style to ensure it meets our expectations. All of our staff and volunteers are required to go through the Fear Free certification process, the shelter pays for it, and that helps a lot. I would also recommend that someone review the email before sending it to the adopter in case edits need to be made or additional information can be offered. I use the following links to find a trainer, behavior consultant, or animal behaviorist in the area:
- Certified Dog Trainer and Behavior Consultant Directory - CCPDT
- Find a Consultant
- The Animal Behavior Society
- I still do my homework/research on the trainers in the area to see if I can recommend specific trainers/behavior consultants/behaviorists that align with our organization's mission, vision, and goals.
