We are a new, small nonprofit based in Oakland, CA whose mission is to keep pets with their guardians and out of shelters by providing resources to pet parents.
We typically do pretty well with receiving donations of many kinds that allow us to do our work, which includes vaccinations, microchipping (and registration), personalized id tags, and other supplies. We are not yet to the point where we can provide vouchers or some other pathway to veterinary care.
However, one basic need for so many, almost everybody we work with, is the need for effective, preventative flea medications. We don't have a vet on board to write prescriptions and I find it incredibly frustrating that we are unable to provide such an important product that so drastically impacts the quality of lives of both the animals and their humans.
We do sometimes get donations, but they are not reliable and it would be incredible to have a sustainable supply. Of course, there's a few other basic meds that are also frustrating to not have on hand without a prescription, but we are not trying to pretend to be vets ourselves.
So if I had one wish for something I'm finding unattainable given our current parameters, it would be to get our hands on effective flea medications. I cannot imagine what pet owners and their pets have to endure when their flea situation is raging out of control.
Does anyone have any suggestions for what feels like an impossible situation?
Thank you in advance,
